Thank you! I've sat on this frame for far too long. Ready for this spring, I have this TX900, an 1981 Trek 950 and a 1982 Trek 970. I plan to do a comparison ride across all three. I'll post the other two in this thread as well. The 950 has been a go to bike of mine for the last couple of years. Curious how the TX900 and 970 compare.

1981/1981.5 Trek 950. Serial number puts this late 1981 and this color was only available on the Dura Ace model or as a 1981.5 frame. Regardless, this bike has received a lot of miles. Purchased with the help from a board member a couple years ago. It was offered at their local co-op. Great bike. Veloflex have more miles on them from last year and are dirty. Rest of the bike just out from a refresh.

1985 670 I just finished, got it from a fellow forum member. Rode great as bought, just wanted one last build I guess.

Thanks! Yeah I think so, 25.5” Trek is a pretty good fit for me, 26” would be best, but they never made those.

Finally found one

Well, I have an embarrassment of riches on my hands now, with four vintage Treks in my possession and one on the way!

Just six months ago, I had no such Treks (1989 Trek 400 that I sold doesn't count). I'll be getting rid of two and then keep one for my wife and two for me.

But you don't care about that, you just want to see my Trek:

1979 Trek 910 in my size and all-time favorite color! Seems to be 100 original except possibly the wheels (SR hubs, Super Champion rims and 27").

I'm going to try my best to keep it this way, but I'm compelled to swap the crankset for an SR Apex.

I know, I'm young and a decade waiting doesn't equate to a lifelong search, but I've always wanted this very bike.

More pics to come, but I gotta raise the saddle and ride it for a bit.

Edited to add: this has a builder's mark on the bottom bracket "F". Anyone know who that is? JohnDThompson

If any of those embarassing bikes are in the 25.5" range, let's talk!

Perfect candidate for a 700c conversion! Hindsight is 20/20, but I find it amusing that the "higher quality" 93X Treks had Shimano 600 or the Campy NR derailleurs- neither of which shifted as well as the SunTour VxGT spec'ed on a 91X or could handle as wide of gears as the VxGT. (Of course hard men didn't need small gears, so didn't need a GT RD.) But, like yours, I put a Cyclone GT on mine, which weighs less than either the Shimano or Campy RD's of the 93X models.

An 86BCD Apex? One of my favorite cranks...

I haven't touched the components on this one, so who knows when in its life the Cyclone derailleurs got added. They aren't listed in the catalog for this year, but could they have been original? Not quite sure how the bike kits worked then.

Yes, the 86 bcd Apex. My absolute favorite bcd! Come to think of it, all the components here are what's stock on my Centurion Super Elite that I can't seem to sell. Seems like I have a type I guess.

As far as 700c conversion, J was under the impression all 910s were 700c. I thought maybe these were replacement wheels. I've never seen these SR hubs before though:

Yeah, I noticed that. The catalog isn't very clear about wheel sizes except for a few specifically labeled 700c. I'm sure there were running changes in some things as well. That generation of Cyclone is my all time favorite derailleur.

Swapped over my saddle, 700c wheels and crankset. Still waiting for the 48t chainring in the mail; the 44 on such a big bike looks tiny.

Still need tires. The 35c Pasela fits fine, I may even be able to get 38s in there!

The original buyer opted for some seat stay rack mounts that I don't think I've ever seen. I would've gone for downtube shifter mounts. I might have to break "period" with this and throw on some of the Powershift Sprint levers.

Congrats on the find! I saw that ad a few days ago and was flabbergasted at the price, certainly for such a rare bird. Glad a BF member snagged it and loves it! Looks like you may have a little more rear tire clearance than my 510? Trek seemed to keep their rear brake bridges lower than the front for these first few years which is weird to me, but then, Schwinn Paramounts had their brake bridges a lot higher in the rear than the front. High-end bike mysteries... Regardless, they ride great no matter what size of (nice) tire you run. Baby blue/robin's egg blue is one of my favorite colors as well. Enjoy!!

Thanks for not driving down here and snatching it before I could!

Yeah, checking clearances on the Trek stable that I've found in my basement, the clearances seem all over the place. All different years and models (and three different sizes), so I guess that makes sense. Once I get a 38mm tire I can find out where the tightest spot will be.

Haha, you're welcome! I had the thought, like, "Oh here we go again, somebody needs to give these poor Treks a good home until new owners can come by and appreciate them. Full disassembly, cleaning, compounding, waxing, touching up of paint, component polishing and changing (if need be), the works.

With the early x30 Treks (vs. the x10 ones that we have, "x" meaning 5, 7, or 9 etc), since those were the racing models, short reach brake calipers were to be fitted and thus the reach was appropriate. The x10s as "touring" or touring-ish would logically have more vertical tire clearance in addition to geometry changes (longer chain stays, more fork rake, etc). Well, we got the geometry changes and longer (aka standard) reach brakes, but only standard reach in the front, essentially. I mean, my calipers have their pads tucked way up in the rear. Once Trek made their "entry level" 400 model (which is still quite nice!), then we got tons of clearance front and rear. Seemed to take until 1981/1982 for them to clearly delineate frames like that. I had a 1981/1982 710 (or 716 as built with Shimano 600) that had the same thing. Killed me because it was beautiful and as a sport tourer (full DB 531 tubing) with fender eyelets, it was primed for sport touring duties. Alas, I sold it for that reason (rear tire and fender clearance) and mostly stand by that decision, though the paint was in great shape, and waxing it only made it more glossy and beautiful. 25s, 28s, or 32s, any of those tire sizes seem to work well with them. Build and ride.

1985 170 Reynolds 753

I have a few Treks kicking around my house. My favorite is this 1985 170 Pro Series. I built it out with Dura Ace 7400 8 speed kind of stretching the envelope with the dual control shifters. I decided to use dual pivot Ultegra brakes because its a rider and I wanted braking power more than period correctness.
