How about a toe clip swap thread?

i find myself with a bunch of toe clips that are too short. Most of what I have are in the 50-55mm depth range. I put together a Flickr album of what I have. The pix there show how I measured them. In theory, I'd be open to selling one or more if you have nothing to trade. Still, I'd prefer to just trade if possible.

Here's what I have:Here are front shots, in the order above. Note that none have been cleaned up. I can provide better pictures.

By chance, I've been sorting through my stock of toe clips too. I wear size 46 shoes, and gravitate towards the Christophe Specials, as the clip extends about 65mm forward of the pedal cage...

Is there any standard way of measuring or quantifying toe clip size?
I'm amazed at how much variation that I find in my various large or extra-large clips.

I've got some Minoura alloy clips marked "LL" that have an extension of only 52mm....

(planning to post some of my extra clips on CR list someday)

I don't think so. I think that flange-to-tip measurement is the closest you'll get to a reproducible measurement. I can't explain your "large" 50mm clips.

Regarding the tiny "LL" Minoura clips, I can only assume that it means "little, little".

I've just been looking for a good (read:cheap) source for new clips at reasonable (read:good) prices, need a half a dozen pairs or so...

Who would want the ones under 60 mm? Mine are 62 mm per your measuring technique and I have rather short (though wide) feet: 9-1/2 US, 42.5 Euro. Possibly the style (how pointed the toes) of one's preferred cycling shoe comes into play, but still . . .

I've got a couple of Large cage sets that are too big for me- an old Avocet and a new-ish MKS wire cage.

If anyone's got a set medium MKS or King cage that are too small...

I decided a pair of Cycle Pro clips I was using was simply too big, even for me. I replaced it this morning with the 65mm Christophe Special from my original list and added it in.

I can't help with MKS or King cage, but maybe post a pic of you too big sets with measurement so others can see what you've got. steelbikeguy's example above will show you how we're measuring. I'm using a somewhat lower tech approach, but then Steve is an engineer, so his measurement tools are better than mine.

Two reasons for shorter clips (assuming they fit your shoes/cleats). Tire/fender clearance and do they don't get crunched and shortened by the road when you pedal hard at a startup. (Car's coming. I think I'm not going to do this pretty.) I do a lot of fix gear riding with fenders. Have large feet and like my cleats back. I experience those issues a fair amount.

A post on the what came for you thread by non-fixie made me aware that Christophe toe clips are still in production. This surprised me a bit, so I began poking around. I discovered some sizing charts:I was surprised in my meandering through Google search results that Cinelli also (still?) makes toe clips, only for double straps though, so apropos only at the velodrome or on your urban fixie. No size info, however, just "large" and "medium."

With several modern manufacturers/resellers, perhaps a toe clip swap isn't really necessary, and toe clips which don't fit belong in the Box O' Crap.

This is what you get when you order new Christophe clips. I paid about €10 a pair, got them from a German supplier:

I ordered the L/XL version, and I'd say they are indeed 70mm. Should be comfy!

I am pleased to see other BFers who still use toeclips and straps, as I have for more than 50 years now.

The DynaDrive pedals used the same three-bolt mounting pattern as later Dura-Ace, 600, and Deore pedals. Unfortunately, that pattern was proprietary to Shimano and only in production for a few years, before clipless took over the market. The 600 and Dura-Ace versions were chromed steel; the Deore version was plastic, quite light but with a tendency to break. You can find them fairly often on eBay, sometimes for outrageous prices, especially the steel versions. Be aware that although some forward and back adjustment is possible with these clips, the sizes tend to run pretty small. I found that a "medium" size clip had to be set at maximum extension to fit my size 41 shoes, and even then jammed a bit on the end of the shoe. It's safest to err on the larger size if you're not sure what size you need.

The Golden Boy would you be interested in selling the large MKS wire cage set? I've been looking for a pair and they appear to be sold out everywhere. Darn Suez Canal...

Yeah, sure- FWIW- I wear between an 8 and 9, and these were too big. IIRC, these were around $30 when I got them... so $15 plus shipping sound good? That's with the mounting screws.
