I am thinking of switching from Shimano to Speedplay Ultra Light Action. Any thoughts?

What are your thoughts? Why are you thinking of switching? Are you unhappy with Shimano pedals and just want to try something new? What's your appeal to speedplay?

Any thoughts?
I wish I were out riding instead of trying to think of something to say here. <grin>

As to moving to speedplay, no thoughts whatsoever. I use Assiomas on my road bike, and my new Look X-track pedals for the Canyon should be here tomorrow.

Man, I love that new-to-me Canyon. It's a fun bike.

Thoughts on what exactly? What do you not like with your current pedals that you are looking for?

I've been using Speedplay pedals since about 2000. For me, free float is a good thing for my knees, and I won't use anything else. However, pedals are a personal thing, and what works for me might not work for you.

I find Shimano sometimes hard to get in and out of. Also, they are not two sided so I have to make sure the correct side is up before clipping in. Speedplay was recommended to me by a friend.

My thought? Make sure your shoes will accept the Speedplay cleats. Otherwise this will get more expensive.

Have you thought of mountain bike pedals? I use Time ATAC XC pedals on all my bikes, road and off road. Double sided, easy in and out, been using them for about 12 years.

I know a couple of people who use them and like them but I am also told that many bike shops don't carry them. I'm sure i could find them online. Also, the nice thing about switching to Speedplay is I wouldn't have to get new shoes.

I don't believe Speedplay/Wahoo are selling those pedals any longer. The line has been completely redone. Cleats for legacy pedals are also hard to find.

I'm in the process of replacing all of my single-sided Shimano SPD pedals with double-sided versions.

Trakhak, what kind are you getting? I don't want to have to get new shoes.

shona, I just get whichever Shimano double-sided spd pedals are available. If there's a difference in quality between Shimano's cheaper double-sided pedals and their more expensive versions, I can't detect it.

Although I did make a mistake in buying one model of Shimano double-sided spd pedals that has a large black platform extending from the pedal body. Those are probably meant to work better with spd shoes with a flexible sole, but I can't use them with any of my shoes with recessed cleats, so they're nearly useless to me.

Basic Shimano SPD double-sided pedals

Thank you Trakhak. I will consider these. I wonder if they will be easier to get in and out of. At least I won't have to keep kicking the pedal to get the connecting side up.

Ok, since Wahoo bought out Speedplay I just called Wahoo and got enough information to encourage me to buy the Speedplay Comp offered by Wahoo. I'll let you know how I like them. Thanks everyone for the input.

Those new Wahoo-era Speedplays look pretty good! Above all walkable with road shoes, and with unexposed hardware like screwheads. Do share how you feel about them once you've used them a bit!

I will let you know. The haven't come yet. I also like that they are two sided.
