Understand. I am not at all impressed with the MTB thing, simply because so many say how fun it is, and can't wait to get back to it in 6 months. You know. After they heal up.

In train-related news, I just saw that the CP Holiday Train isn't going to be making the rounds this year.
We've been brainstorming outdoor holiday activities and the CPHT is one of the things that the kids get a kick out of each year. I thought that there would be a good chance of it running, since all of the concerts/activities are outdoors, but no dice.
So far, the only thing we've found is the holiday market/festivities at the American Swedish Institute - there's a Scandinavian saying, "there is no such thing bad weather - only bad clothing," and they're walkin' that walk.
Even the Minneapolis Holidazzle, which is bunch of outdoors events and vendors, has been effectively canceled this year (they're "going virtual" ).

One of the guys in my club actually places bike priority by tire size - the fatter the better. I just don't get that about him. He's got it all backwards.

Of course olde school MTBing was pretty much just slightly more difficult gravel riding, compared to DH, DJ or Enduro.
I generally stick to trails where you don't see anyone in a full face helmet.

It depends on how much time I've got. 45 minutes on a MTB can be a blast, but way too short on the road.
Then again, It's a 30 minute round trip to the closest trails to my house...
The MTB is going to get really important here soon once we revert back to standard time.
There's a trail 5 minutes from work, so that's going to be the only way I'll get any saddle time on a weekday.

I think that's a big part of the gravel appeal. Most of the fun of MTB but less time in the hospital

The only way to get in to a lot of trouble on them is to go really fast, but I'm not a good enough mountain biker to get up even close to that speed

Road riding is a different story. Granted, my road clubs have a lot more riders than any off-road groups I ever rode with, but the long list of injuries and hospitalizations is staggering, including myself.
Mountain bike riding is fun, there are no cars to deal with, and people I have ridden with are generally more casual in their approach, rather than the drop everyone and risk everything 'tude some roadies have.
I always try to stay within my skill set and comfort zone, especially these days. You can't just hop on a mountain bike and expect to crush the same riders you crush on the road if those riders have mtb skills. Lots of roadies try it and hate it. It's different and it takes time to learn how to do it.
A tough 5 hour ride on a mountain bike with the right people is at least as gratifying as a tough 5 hour road ride.
If it's windy or drizzly or snowing a little an off road ride is a lot more fun.

If I'm riding from home, I'm about 6 miles from the usual meet-up locations - on a road bike, easy peasy. Bundled up for below freezing temps and rolling on big knobbies? Eesh - getting out of the door and riding there and back is probably enough to scratch that get-out-of-the-house itch. If I were to head out for a solo ride, which would probably be more frequent, it would either be sticking to the bike paths or riding ~7 miles each way to get to some wooded trails.

The pillars of the community I ride with like to go on the local, gravel canal towpath in the winter. It's a nice change of pace, but I find the long flat rides painful on the contact points and I hate terrorizing the other trail users. That said, I'll probably do it again this year.

My Local Liquor Store has a membership points program, but they recently decided to put an expiration date on the points. I'm about $60-70 away from having a $50 credit, but both my points and credit will be expiring soonish (they recently changed their website and I can't see the specifics, which is always nice ).
In any event, I need to buy booze and then I need to turn right around and buy some discounted booze. I would have thought that this would be a nice problem to have, but the handwringing is more considerable than expected.

Access to suitable riding has traditionally been one of the big reasons that I've been reluctant to get an MTB/fattie. I'm not really a drive-to-a-ride kind of guy - that whole process adds enough hurdles and stress that it's just not something that I want to do other than on special occasions.
If I'm riding from home, I'm about 6 miles from the usual meet-up locations - on a road bike, easy peasy. Bundled up for below freezing temps and rolling on big knobbies? Also, if you are looking in to a fat tire bike, have you priced the tires for those at all?
I cringe when I have to ride my cheap ass Kendas on pavement. Ain't no way I'd want to ride a pair of ~$100+ knobbies on pavement for any appreciable amount of time.

I wonder if the fat tire guys say a similar thing, but that the 2 tires on your fattie should cost more than the 4 tires on the car
