Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My DT Swiss freehub just exploded

Hey everyone

was climbing to Cave Code in the Great Smokey Montains and my rear DT Swiss wheel just starting spinning and can’t torque the cassette anymore

seems like the mecanism just broke and the freehub is spinning freely

I am currently in a hotel in Nashville, it’s raining and haven’t looked for wheelset for years so I am seeking for your wisdom on what is a good carbon wheelset out there With disc brake compatibility. I use 32cc gatorskin 700cc tires.

10 years ago I bought Zipp 404 wheelset font my TT bike and these are the last wheel I bought. The DT Swiss came with my BMC road bike so didn’t check the quality.

anybody vouching for the Zipp firecrest? I am searching for good resistant climbing wheels.

thanks everyone

Well that stinks! Are you holed up until you can get bike rolling again? Are you shopping locally, or are you able to wait for shipped items? And your current hub; is it irreparable?

If you can make it to Franklin, about 20 miles south of Nashville, look up RBs Cyclery. Good folks there and they may be able to give you some advice.

If you go with the Zipps, are you ok with hookless rims? That is something that is a non-starter with me, so just be aware of that.

You should be able to pull the free hub off and see what is going on. Super simple system and can be repaired without tools.

Happened to a friend when we were mountain biking. Took his rear wheel and slammed it to the ground and the pawls freed up and we started riding again.
Happened to me on a Cole wheel and the freehub body split lengthwise. Never found a freehub body for it.

Do DT make any hubs which use pawls? I thought they were only ratchet systems.

Some of them. My Cole hub has the pawls in the hub instead of on the freehub body. They were sold after bankruptcy and I wrote to them and the guy said they would look for one for me but he never got back to me.

I don't have anything to offer concerning new wheels.

But concerning the failed freehub. I'm only familiar with the DT Swiss ratchet type hubs. But regardless, I would think you could open it up and see what's going on. Maybe it just needs a good cleaning and greasing and then would work good as new. Of course, nothing last forever, and maybe something wore out. But even then, maybe something simple that you can get replaced locally.

Good luck

How old is that hub?

I ask because I had heard about that problem, but was told that it was fixed. And I just bought a new set of wheels with DT Swiss 240 hubs.

Do you recall when that happened?

I've been trying to reach someone at Cole about replacement rims, and my email keeps bouncing.

thx

From what I've heard they were acquired by new owners somehow. They were gone and came back with new wheels, etc. I wrote to them and a guy responded right away and told me where to get the part # and when I gave him the number he wrote that he would see if he could find a freehub but I never heard back, even after writing to them again. I got the feeling they were closed again but I sorta gave up.

I have Schurikin (sp?) wheels. They're aluminum with short cf fairing. The hubs are beautiful. They're just gathering dust.

The problem is with the cassette and not the hub. On long tours I take a backup cassette and a tool to remove the cassette if I can borrow a bench vise for 10 minutes to make the swap.

DT does make a pawl hub that is their cheaper hub. Speaking of wheels...I still like alloy custom wheels as they are incredibly comfy BUT of all the carbon wheels I have tired (ENVE 3.4 SES, ENVE Foundation 45, plus some Specialized wheels) the ZIPP 303 Firecrest is by far the best wheelset. All those are quick enough but this is the most comfortable wheelset. The ride-quality difference is evident and really nice. I did have them built up with DT240 EXPs and I like the hubs EXCEPT they are loud, even after greasing. They are louder (coasting, of course) than my other regular 240s, regular 350s, Chris King R45s, or Formula Pawl hubs. They are super easy to service though. No tools needed.

I’m assuming you mean the freehub body, as opposed to the hub itself, is the problem, not the cassette.

I can’t imagine how a cassette could just start spinning freely on a functioning freehub. Even if the lock ring came off, the splines on the freehub body would prevent the casesette from spinning freely while still,on the freehub.

You can replace the freehub mechanism on DT hubs. It’s an easy process and the free hubs are lest than $100. ( I’ve done it switching from Shimano to 12 speed Sram.) If the wheels are otherwise good, the hub body itself is intact, and maintenance on the free hub doesn’t solve your problem, I’d replace the freehub body before trashing an otherwise good wheel.

the bike and wheels are from 2016

the hub was impossible to remove for the wheel, I tried everything, even the guy from the bike shop worked on it for 1 hour let it swim in grease but it seems the hub was cold welder to the freehub

ended buying Gull GD46 wheelset at the MOABbike shop in Murfreesboro but the carbon spokes from the rear wheel exploded after my 7th ride when I was in Oklahoma.

couldn’t ride the last 3 days of my road trip and I ended up ordering Zipp 404 firecrest wheelset when back home. Still trying to figure out how to apply the sealant correctly since I am losing a bit of air pressure still everyday with the tubeless hookless tires.

I have a pair of Zipp 60 and Zipp 404 , they are stellar quality wheels. Other choice that I recommend is the older Mavic Cosmic Carbone SSC, the 571 hub is trouble free and reliable

Been riding on hookless setup for the past 3 years now, no incident. You just need to stick to the hookless compatible tires. The list isn't very long, but the major brands are in there.

For your hub problem, it may be an easy fix. Bring it to a LBS - they should be able to tell you what's wrong on the spot.

For the Zipp question, you can't go wrong with any of them. The firecrest are good climbing wheels.

It's not just the hookless part, it's the pressures. Car tires do not run the high pressures that road tires do

you are scared of the tire to get off the rim or blowout?

Max PSI on the tubeless hookless rims is 70 PSI. The car tires I ride can go up to 52 PSI.

This varies so much from a brand to another... My rims (Giant SLR 1) have a maximum pressure of 125PSI and they are hookless and tubeless compatible. The tires I use (Schwalbe Pro One) have a maximum pressure of 90-95PSI if I recall properly.
