Here is a still from a video of Lance Armstrong in 1989, age 16, riding what appears to be a Kestrel (Talon?) Certainly a brand with roots in Triathlon community.

It is a Kestrel 4000. In my estimation the best frame they ever made, at least the one I liked the most.

On another topic it is a shame that this dude was a very capable athlete and the legacy he leaves is a very negative one. A generation from now it won't matter as his name will be lost to time along with many other pro athletes. As Paul Simon so aptly wrote, "Every generation sends a hero up the pop charts".

very early in his career his measured / tested numbers (v02, lactate threshold, whatever) were off the chart and provided a glimpse at his potential

I saw him race as an amateur - he was sent out on a solo breakaway to (basically) break up the field … he just kept going … he was a beast

Concur with others above that he was a “very capable athlete” prior to when he began doping. Pointing out that TiHabanero said “capable” and not ‘hero’ ‘ethical’ ‘legend’ ‘leader’ or ‘winner,’ etc. Also pointing out that…presuming he didn’t continue doping after he was shunned from cycling…his did continue his athletic prowess by posting Marathon times well under 3-hours. I guess since there's not point to the thread, we should be talking about this clown as well. They grew up in the same general area a few years apart. I think they both rolled around in IROC Zs. Add Larry Johnson, Spud Webb and Dennis Rodman also, although 2 of those aren't clowns.

Bunch of top athletes are arseholes. A bunch of people are arseholes for that matter...

Take just about any athlete that is considered the GOAT, or in the conversation for being the GOAT - there is often something "special" within that person, comes with the "must win" mentality.

My opinion/take on watching sports - watch for the on-field play, the amazing feats people (both natural and unnatural) are capable of, and try to keep the athlete separated from the person.

Learned that at a young age - my childhood sports hero was Pete Rose, and the Philadelphia Phillies of the time. Pete was a hell of a baseball player - one of a kind. The Phillies were a hell of a team... Pete, Steve Carlton... amazing to watch.
Pete was on coke, had his roommate procure, travel with and take arrests for his coke. Pete was a child molester/pedo, Pete gambled on the game. Steve as a coke head, the rest of the team admitted to using all sorts of drugs - speed, roids... just like the rest of baseball.

MJ is a raging arsehole - ask any of his teammates...

And I don't kid myself by thinking any athlete of those times, in any sport, was in any way clean. Just like I don't think any of them are clean now...

So, IMHO - if you're going to watch sports, you have to separate the man from the athlete. You never really know who or what is behind the performance.

From a pure sporting standpoint, in a field of doped up cyclists, LA made the sport interesting to watch. And never once did I think he was clean - just like I didn't think anyone he was racing against was clean, just like anyone for generations before him, or after him...

Lance and his victim (I guess according to the above post) shared the same doctor and used the same doping methods.
