Pulley Hunting

I have an 8 speed Shimano Deore LX rear derailleur on my mountain bike. The model is RD-M567 (SGS long cage). The derailleur pulleys need to be replaced. According to the Shimano drawing the part numbers for the pulleys are :

Guide Pulley 5UG 9805

Tension Pulley 5UG 9806

I searched the web for these and can’t find anything I can buy. There are lots of pulleys available on ebay and Amazon but it is not clear if they will fit my derailleur. The pulleys on my derailleur are marked narrow and are 10 tooth.

I would appreciate any help pointing me to replacement pulleys.

Thanks

As long as your pulleys are 11 tooth these with the sealed bearings are as good, if not better, than the Shimano pulleys. Probably cheaper too. Velo Orange Sealed Bearing Universal Jockey Wheels (velo-orange.com)

I would highly recommend the Tacx Pulley Wheels but alas they stopped making them **shaking fist angrily** They are pretty much all I use on vintage bikes I usually use the T4025 because why the heck not have ceramic ones. Currently am using them on a Dura Ace 7400 6 speed derailleur but have plans to replace the ones on my 8 speed XT derailleur when those finally die (I have one set left wish I had bought stock in that stuff)

You may find a set somewhere in the Euro market I have seen a couple places that say they have them in stock but some won't ship to the U.S.

I find it odd that the folks selling the pulley wheels mention that it is for a 6,7,8 speed derailleur but there is no mention of how many teeth are on the pulley wheel, no wheel diameter, no wheel width. If the dimensions and tooth count were provided it would be enormously helpful.

I measured my 10-tooth pulley wheel diameter at 38.2 mm, and the thickness is 8.2mm. Apparently shimano also makes 10mm which would not fit. Unfortunately, the width information does not seem to be in any ads.

Shimano “Narrow” 10t pulleys were specifically for 8 speed RD’s.

The 10t Narrow are really hard to find, but there is a good used set on eBay. I got a couple pairs 6 months ago from Bikewagon, but I just happened to see them.

I believe, the 11t 9 speed pulleys will work, provided you are not pushing the max cog.

Yes, 11T pulleys will work fine in a long cage RD as there is lots of room between the pulleys. As long as you're not using a large cog on the cassette that is making you screw in the B adjustment fully, the radius of a 11T pulley will only be about 1mm larger.

The width of the pulley is not too much of a concern, as long as both pulleys are the same width and the screw is long enough. The only possible issue is if your cage is close to the spokes, usually not a problem on a MTB, as a much wider pulley will move the cage closer to the spoke a little.

Even pulleys without the float (Centeron) feature will work as long as you can properly 'dail-in' the shifting. Cheap alloy could be an option, with the possibility of a little noise.

On my RD-M739 SGS, about the same as vintage as yours, cheap ebay sealed bearings alloy pulleys work fine in an 8 speed setup.
