Northern Boulevard Protected Bike Lane

Northern Boulevard Protected Bike Lane

Northern Boulevard Protected Bike Lane in Douglaston: note well, the dead end street (234th) behind the auto dealership, does connect sort of with a trail north/south through Alley Pond Park, HOWEVER: it is a very muddy path with lots of rocks and tree roots to run over. You can’t ride a road bike on it.

Lowrider

Lowrider

Rain Canopy up

Rain Canopy folded and stowed

Test rode the new velomobile inspired creation. The seat was lowered 10” , so the roof height was likewise lowered.

No.....we've been getting some nice tandem rides in, but not Thursday. On the other hand, I've acquired a 13 footer and have begun.....yakkking. Not on the north shore with this one, yet. Have to get cracking on a roof solution.

Took the soon to be 13yo to Grant's tomb crit this morning. Originally signed her up for 13/14 girls but there was no competitors so I moved her to women's 4/5. The only DNF was her teammate who should have been in contention for podium but crashed twice due to the wet, I think her tires weren't good enough but thankfully she wasn't hurt. My daughter ended up lapped but hung in all the way to the end, and put in a good showing against and older and more experienced crowd.

The BMS was good. It was the battery that had reverse polarity. Thanks to Rough Riders Ebike for that heads up, or it would have exploded

Tool Set with chrome handled ratchet I carry on rides in a black drawstring bag

The new Fiberglass Ladies Bicycle 11th Prototype The lowrider seat keeps the roof lower, as intended.

Sea Cliff to Glen Cove or Glen Cove to Sea Cliff. I rode counterclockwise this time

With my 10ft boat I could lift it, 36 lbs, onto J bars on my rack. With my new 12.5 boat at 53 lbs, I had to rethink and got Yakima Sweet Roller holders. The boat bow just goes up and you lift and roll onto the roof. The boat mounts on its bottom. As secure. I got mine when Brands sent me a 20% off coupon.

Wife and I decided to see how much of the LI triple crown we could do; Glacier Ridge, Overton and Cathedral Pines. We did all of Glacier, the main loop of Overton and only one of its black diamonds for a total of 20 miles. Mostly poor planning on our part, we brought enough water but not enough food and with the humidity and air quality we just ran out of steam. A better day with more forethought and I think we'll be able to clear all of Overton as well but not certain we're that close to being able to clear all three. Didn't help that we rode Dark Side of the Moon twice.

One of my cycling and now yakking companions has a obtained a variety of roof options over the years including rollers, but he keeps coming back to simple foam blocks for his 17 ft (!!!) homebuilt, putting it atop a RAV4 which is similar to my car. I'm loath to buy something that has to stay up on the roof full time; I'd rather spend the 20 minutes attaching something before use. Cycling content; all these decades of fooling around with bikes including tandems and I've never used a roof rack. Just me being stubborn I guess.

Well cost effective as well. A buddy uses foam blocks on his very expensive Kevlar canoe. I give him grief, but add it all up - Yakima aero cross bars, $250, Towers $159, Locks $55, fit pads $130 ?, J bars $250, Roller Pads, $220, plus the bike carrier just in case - $300

Bike is becoming a Velomobile, piece by piece.

Besides my Ebike I have the Eleventh Prototype Fiberglass Ladies Bicycle . I would like to put a motor on this because the seat is lower and further back , exactly the way motorcycle seats are designed & I believe there’s a reason for that. I’d like to put a 100 watt solar panel on the roof to charge the battery and contributing to the locomotion.

Quintessential summer morning. Couple of days before I paddled across that scene. And I'm still failing to notice trash cans in the frame.

I guess the humidity is here to stay. I had the Mrs squirting water onto my head thru the helmet vents while underway this morning. 43 sweaty miles.

Took the two older kids to the Kissena Twilight series on Wed night, 12yo did great beating out several women over the course of the three races. Usually managed to stay with the lead pack until the bell lap but even there she wasn't always dropped. She does seem slower to react to the bell as the two she's in front of in the blurry pic both got the jump on her at the start of the final lap but she pulled ahead of both. Currently ranked 4th overall for cat 4 women. The 10yo did very well over all getting 4th in all three races. and tied for 1st in the team competition. Unfortunately, while I have pics of her race too, its harder to pic a 10yo out of a pack of 6 9-11yo in the U13 category when they're all in the same uniform, unlike picking a 12yo out from a pack of adult women. Both showed real energy and determination. Trying to get the oldest prepped for NYS Crit and TT on the 12th and 19th, and trying to find a tandem to borrow for the time trial for her and I to race together.

Cat attacks derailleur cable

The cat must be attracted to the Tailbox. Cats always seem to be attracted to boxes.
My neighbors cat is fighting with the derailleur cable in this photo.
This is the aerodynamic Kammback Tailbox, with 11° taper. This bike is my fastest bike, it’s faster than my ebike.
No ride photos, but I rode to the H-Mart in Jericho on Saturday, and Glen Cove on Sunday.

Rest of the family was away this week with special events so I took the oldest to hop the A train into Manhattan. She ditched the road bike for a 24yo Trek 7100 and I took my Motobecane Uno single speed cross bike.

Not that good at on the bike selfies but she was enjoying herself.

Just thought this looked really cool. I assume its part of the old city fortifications.

Made it to the Cloisters, where we spent about an hour and a half enjoying the artwork.

Asked if she wanted to head over the GW before stopping for soup dumplings at a noodle house on 123rd.

The answer was yes and yes.

Finished with a walk over the Brooklyn bridge, much nicer trip than the bike path, caught the A back in Brooklyn.

A (fishless) trip yesterday down memory lane.....my father used to take me down here as a kid on bike and/or fishing excursions. The bikes and the fishing stuff have improved. I found that Shimano reel, packed solid with silt, while fording (full disclosure, falling INTO while fording) the Broadwater River in Montana. Now as smooth as that derailleur of the same name. I had a great Dad. Time marches on.

Today a nice 50 miler to the other side of this island, with the also great Mrs and about 10 friends. A good day. Bikes are good.
