I teach ballet and modern dance, and still perform a bit myself too. (And it's more like an afternoon/evening/weekend job, but whatever.) The bummer is that having a physically and mentally draining job really gets in the way of my bike training... But at least when I do get back on the bike after a hiatus, I usually am still in pretty good shape.

It certainly is challenging... And what's worse, you have to try to look graceful when you do it--grimacing and grunting like a football player is very tempting sometimes! There's a lot of crossover in skills too, in terms of agility and strength required, in fact ballet is often a required class for college football players. And if you look at injury frequency/severity and career length, professional ballet dancers and professional football players are very similar.

Fun story (at least for me)--I did one of Andy Hampsten's tours last summer, and he was saying that at one point he was training like mad and had a whole flexibility program he was working on too, and was feeling pretty good about his strength and conditioning--and then he went and took a ballet class on a lark, and it completely destroyed him...

I have found that bicycling has been really complementary cross training for ballet and modern dance--my knees are feeling stronger and more stable now, after four years of cycling, than they did when I was ten years younger. Likewise, ballet and modern dance classes provide a killer cross training workout for cycling (and really help with postural/back issues from being hunched over on the bike).

In an earlier post I mentioned being a programmer. I was also a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu / Submission Grappling Instructor for a while part time. I guess that would be represented under the category "other"? Seems like a fair number of people here might have professional experience in coaching or other fitness / sports related fields?

I often ride with those guys with all the gear but no idea. They asked me one day what I do as a job, I replied, I'm in the construction industry. They then went on to say. "Like a site manager or something". "no I'm a plasterer". I Then got the look of disappointment from a few of them. Some people think that if you have a bike above a certain value you must have a trust fund or have somewhat of a decent job that pays well.

I say to that small percentage of cyclist.

The people I see in my area (some houses are $1,000,000-20,000,000, median house price is probably around $200 to $300 grand, with 150 on the low side) are in oil and gas, some business executives, doctors and medical staff. All ride pretty nice high end bikes.

By the way I'm studying petroleum engineering, so if anyone reading this is a top oil and gas executive and can get me a job with a nudge, let me know and I can email you my resume for a full time job next year. : )
