Good thing I'm 5'4" then. And a short stem can do wonders; my Princess is sporting an awesome 80mm vintage Terry stem.

I looked up the levers & brakes you mentioned. Both should be compatible with eachother. That they don't meet your expectations suggests another issue is responsible.

The Bike Forums orthofoxy is to suggest Kool-Stop Salmon pads & compressionless kevlar reinforced housing, for almost any rim brake related issue you can imagine.

The pads should be adjusted to rest flat against the braking surface when applied with just the slightest toe-in. Aluminum rims work better than steel.

That looks awfully tall for a 17" frame. Do you have any more info? What year? What kind of steel? Butted or straight gauge? Pics of the seat tube decals?

I can get you some more pics in the next few days... She bought it in 1999, it was lightly used. It could be a 95/96? I can't find much online The frame sticker says True Temper TT Lite. I believe at least the main tubes are double butted; super light when all the heavy old parts are off. I can measure it in the next few days. Might be an 18"? I know older MTB sizing is odd (it was too small for me and I am nearly 6'). Not much info on the Google unfortunately.

Thanks oldtimeyirv , I think I'm going to pass on this one. I've never cared for suspension forks; it's a personal prejudice. Also, I really really don't need yet another project bike.

Good! I passed on the Tassajara too; turned out the 16" frame was 13"; it felt like an undersized BMX bike.

Just finished this "unfinished" 1994(???) Trek 930 Singletrack. Paint removed and then clear coated. New V brakes(I already had the levers for them) and tires. I had to find a shorter stem(used on Ebay), original drivetrain, I had the saddle and Handlebars lying around already. turned out really nice.

In the process of rebuilding my '89 Stumpjumper Comp--I was using the Voodoo Scorcher bars, but lucked across these 80s pre-specialized WTB drops (so the BB1's?) in a junk pile. Also just rebuilt the wheels with Velocity Cliffhanger rims--now if only we can see a few more companies producing 26x2.1 tires (can't fit 2.3 in the back); this is getting the Specialized Renegades and it'll be ready to go. And yes, the Stryper-inspired bar tape is a bit much...we'll see how long it lasts before I switch to something less garish

This past fall a bike popped up on a local FB marketplace post. I decided to get in touch and go have a look even though the photo barely showed a bike in with all the "stuff" piled around it. I had sold everything that even looked like a MTB during the "pandemic bike summer" including my 2016 Giant ATX converted to drop bar. The new owner wanted flat bars so I kept the drop bars. This 1995 Norco Katmandu was poorly maintained rusty chain, wowed wheel and bad brakes but the paint, build and size (20") was right. For a quick exchange of $50, the owner wished me luck and continued on with cleaning out his drive shed. I got the bike back in good condition, replaced tires cables bearings etc. and a couple of weeks ago took it for an all afternoon test ride in pretty chilly weather. It worked well, felt good and I was pleased. SO......., I took it all apart and started mocking up the new version with drops, bar ends and Tektro brakes and levers. I think it will turn out well and I love the deep purple color.

Finished rebuilding my '89 stumpjumper comp--much more fun and nimble than the flats or swept-back bars I'd had on previously. I think this will be a fun forest road explorer and light-duty bikepacker when I want something in between my Vaya & my hardtail:

It's the Origin 8 Gary II bar and it's 25.4. I bought it several years ago for a failed project along with the shifters and brake levers so they've been sitting around for a while doing nothing. They really work for this project. Here's a review of them.
