Okay, now I get it. I read through the whole thread and without the sound track of the recent construction next door and it makes sense. Rules do look pretty simple, and I get the goal of trying to keep everything pre 1988.
If I was trying to do that, I might try to track down a couple bike catalogues from 1988. I’d pick Trek and Bridgestone. Both would be pretty easy to find. They would give you a really good idea of what was around then.Trek would tell you what was new, BS would tell you what was interesting. If a part ended up on those production bikes, you might still be able to find one.
Keep us updated on the ride. If it’s fun, and If can get in for 2022, then maybe I will make that postponed visit to the southern relatives on the way.

Did Campy make triple groupsets back then?

"The brakes are DiaCompe, with original 35-year-old pads"

Brakes? We don't need no stinking brakes!

That caught my eye as well...odd choice, fresh pads/shoes are cheap and oh so nice.

Yes, initially a set of fasteners and spacers that allowed still only a 42t small ring, then a set of standoffs that fit into a special drilled and threaded spider arm and provided for a 36t ring.

Ok thanks for the info! That helps narrow down that I won't be looking for a Campy setup.

Oh sweet I just found my long lost Dia Compe non-aero brake levers. What are the best replacement hoods for those?

I need someone to school me on toe clip pedals and cleats. I can't for the life of me decide what to look for, this was all before my time. The guy in the article said he used Vittoria 1976 shoes with old 105 pedals, which I think require a special cleat. Are there any other good options to look for?

If these will do you any good you can have them. Seems like a noble cause.

Oh heck yeah. Someone needs to school me on how to use them/what I'd need. I assume I'd need at least the correct cleats? I have no idea what those are.. help!

This is close to where I live. I'll keep this in mind for '022. The 75 mile road is closed which is the ride I would have chosen. For a bike, I think I would have taken my 70s era Motobecane Grand Record. It is currently set up with 27 inch wheels but I'll bet it will take a 38 c if I were to run 700c wheels. Plus I'm running a TA crank which will allow me to run 46/30 rings.

Just get on the waitlist, that's what I did. They've been moving people in so give it a shot.
