Do you guys let your kids bike to school? Why or why not?
Do you guys let your kids bike to school? Or do you bike your kids to school and drop them off at school?

Over the past few years, kids biking to middle school in my town has increased dramatically. I am constantly biking around town and the number of kids on bikes is refreshing. The town also has a ride your bike to school program, where grammar school children ride accompanied by adults.

Here I'm so close to school that there's no point to bike (400 meters). In spite of not needing it, I asked for a parking place for bikes at the school and didnt get it. We bike almost every day to the sports center, a difficult ride for the many streets we have to cross and only my eldest child can ride the whole way. She is 5 and doing ok, learning to be aware of the perils of the road and to be extremely careful when crossing the streets. We dont ride sharing the road with cars, she rides in the walking pathway and I go walking or riding very slowly. One kilometer from home starts a bike path and there all of us can bike free.

LOL. Every once in a while we will get the Boy (age 7) to bike with us to school. He loves going over the overpass to stop and wave a the cars! For the most part though, he prefers the bus because of the social interaction with his peers.

I usually ride along with my kids to school. They leave their bikes there and I bike back to pick them up. 1st and 3rd grade.

Alex bikes most days
After many years of trying to peel the youngun' off the computer to "go outside" and his constant complaints of "the bus sux" and many guided tours of how to get to and from school, either from home or Grandmas house, Alex at the age of 15 finally decided he could ride the 1.2 mile journey to class.
I'm pleased...and it only takes him about 12 minutes.
He says in typical 15 year old fashion: "Well, It's faster than walking."

Still biking with me or the missus - in the summer. Oldest is 6 and been biking to school since he was 4, 4yo still won't get off the trailer bike ( Burley Kazoo).
Ride is about 2.5km, mostly power line bike trail. (Paved)

but depending on sports, there became the need to pick them up, especially in middle school & high school. then they began to drive & get jobs so we got a 3rd car that they could share. now they're in college. 1 is in the city & has no desire for a car except for his summer job. the other is in a more rural college area & would like a car for 1st semester next yr but we have no plans for that & she can get by without. the car the share can't be trusted so far from home & she can't have mine. plus she'll be abroad 2nd semester
