How many times have you watched "Breaking Away"?
It was on the Turner Classic Movie channel tonight and I watched it with my wife. Must be the 4th time I have seen it. Still holds up well.
I read that it was voted one of the top ten inspiring movies of American genre out of 100 selected.

Don't know how many times I've seen it but we own it on DVD. The last time we watched it we had our 15 year old triplet grandsons over. They seemed to enjoy it. The rest of our grand kids are all girls and I doubt they would like it as well. We do have a 7 year old great grandson. Maybe in 5 or 6 years I'll be watching it again.

Saw it again tonight with my wife. Not sure how many times through the year but had watched it as a young cyclist when it first came out. It still inspires me to ride hard for the sheer enjoyment of it. I had been drafting semi's since '74 so when the movie came out I was captivated by that scene.

When I worked at a hospital in Northern IN, I got to talking to one of the pharmacists who had graduated from IN Univ about "Breaking Away". A comment he made:

My favorite lines, of course from Paul Dooley (dad): "No, I don't feel lucky to be alive. I feel lucky I'm not dead. There's a difference." As a fan of ironic double negatives, this always makes me laugh. That and "Refund... ...refund". He makes the movie for me.

Several times. I watched it again last night. I guess the reason why is that it is a feel good movie where the good guy wins.

I lived in Bloomington - and was a new cyclist - during filming and was able to see a couple of scenes being shot. Have watched the film probably 3 times, the last being a couple of years ago a day after going down from Indy for a Bloomington Bicycling Club Breaking Away Ride, the route of which went by several filming locations.
When I was a student at IU, the locals were referred to as Stonies, which was changed by the film makers to Cutters.

I watched it when it came out (in high school), and again last year. I empathized more with the dad the 2nd time. For all the special stunts and fancy camera work in "Premium Rush", I still "felt" the biking scenes more in "Breaking Away".

I got it on DVD maybe 10 years ago, and got the Blu-ray version for Xmas this year. I usually watch it at least once a year. It always gets me pumped up for cycling. And when I get that "Iti" music stuck in my head, I can shave 10 minutes off my normal commute time!

I was in 1st year uni when that came out, living in residence and the floor president was a third year guy with a scholarship. He had a lovely cinelli with campy hanging on his wall while I kept my rusty CCM locked outside.
I didn't consider myself a serious roadie till several years later, but I'm pretty sure I know when I knew I wanted to be one.

I swoon over that Masi in the certain scenes. Understandably other bikes are camo'd to look like it from what I've read. The Gran Criterium would be my dream bike.

Regularly, I own a copy, thankfully. Always enjoy picking out the many errors and oversights. Monica and I saw it on its first release, and I always tried to catch a televised showing, I got tired of reading when people had watched it so I found a copy on Amazon.

It was so strange when I saw it the first time. These we the guys I raced with! John VandeVelde was a huge influence on me. Good times, good times.
I've seen it all the way through maybe 5-6 times. It had a certain rawness to it, not the high tech filming in todays movies. Simple theme, well written, and great characters.
