Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Homeless Olympian Rebecca Twigg

There is an article in the Seattle Times regarding Olympic medalist Rebecca Twigg, who has been homeless for years in Seattle (I can't link to it but it's in the news and homeless sections--and yes, the Seattle paper has a department for homelessness issues). Surely her unstable family as a child has played a part in her ending up homeless, and it seems there may have been existing mental health issues, but it's interesting that she points to feeling lost when her career ended because it seemed that cycling was was what she was meant to do. The focus and tenacity (and self absorption) necessary of an elite athlete can take a toll, especially after retirement....

Sad story. I remember working on her team bikes when I was with Trek.
