BB 118.5 vs 118
Greetings! I’m restoring a tandem with Ultegra Octalink BBs . The ones I pulled out are marked 118.5 BB6500 68 1,37x24. There are lots of 68 118 Bottom brackets, available. Doe the extra 0.5 mm make any difference? I’m inclined to say no but would like your opinions.

You have a sample of the 118 you are looking at? May be a different spline configuration.

They claim to have one here in 118.5mm. They want a arm and leg for it! But for old stuff on old bikes it is what it is.

See the differences below. Note the model number, the 'C' or 'ES' are V2 and will damage a V1 crank's splines.
They are not interchangeable so you need to seek out a V1 in the 118.5 length. Didn't seem that anyone else ever made third party substitutes.

It's just the difference in the DuraAce, Ultegra and 105 name and part numbers and whatever is special for the more costlier groups. Which today for other components in the groups usually means it is made from materials that will give a lighter weight. However they are compatible physically. Not certain what they'd do different in a BB other than just hold the manufacturing tolerances better.

Yes, just get the correct length and BB threading. There may be some quality/material/polishing differences between the models but details are not available. The 109.5mm 7700 DA was a different design with adjustable races and a double bearing system, but don't know of this was carried over to the 7703.

The 5500 is pretty much all that you can buy new anymore. It's a good replacement.
