Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I like to lift during our long winters and actually build up some definition in my arms but it goes away after riding/running all summer. I wouldn't judge a book by its cover though as I bet a lot of strength is packed into good cyclists "skinny arms" - kind of like a spider monkey very efficient. Big arms usually are paired with big bellies in every gym I've been to also.

I do remember the Air Force MPs being pretty good at shooting benjo mutts and their own aircraft tho.

I think my arms are almost as skinny as the OP pic. I've been able to carry anything I've needed to, plus I can climb any hill I've encountered.

Interesting article. It still comes down to the point of training your body for a specific sport, if any of those crossfit athletes can compete with top cyclists then fair enough but I doubt that's the case.

My skinny arms were able to dig a few 2.5 foot deep post holes in dry soil. Guess it is not that bad.

Wow, at that weight I would hope you are a woman. Seriously it is no wonder why some of you get picked on and harassed while on bike rides.

I think my weight perceptions (as well as so some others) are dictated by previous (years ago) playing weights in football. I also have a minimum requirement of how much my bench is as well as consecutive push ups. So at 5'10" I rarely dip below 175. So I'd rather tote around extra weight and not look like a refugee, but that is my personal preference.

The skinny dude is much stronger than the pretty boy-muscled guy. Both are nice and strong people but in terms of lifting stuff and endurance, the skinny guy who doesn't even have a serving of meat in his arms, no glutes, bass guitar chest can lift 2, sometimes 3 bags of quickrete and unload the flatbed in record time. Too bad he moved bad he was the best person that help me with my honey do's. Tolerant to pain as well.

However pretty boy get's killer girls all the time. The skinny dude has a nagging chubby jealous wife. Oh well!

My arms are as strong as I need them to be. I'm not worried about it.

Also, MGtrack - can I assume you ride the Superdrome? Hell of a good track.

requirement for what? military or law enforcement ok.. anything else.. why?

again i'm 5'7 120 lbs considered still in the "normal" range for BMI (bull**** measuring index IMO but whatever)

I don't get picked on while on the road... usually the folks bigger than me are sucking wind too hard up the hills to talk ****.

The problem is that big meathead football players have never thought of anything but "big and bulky" as a positive thing. That's been drilled into their heads since day one so it's not really their fault. But for people who do other sports that encourage high strength to weight ratios then being slim AND strong is not such a hard concept to understand.

Haha this topic has nothing to do with cycling and everything to do with e-peen pissing contest and a sad, sad, truth that most people who make these topics are so insecure with themselves they need to "laugh" at someone who does not look exactly like them.

Quite pathetic actually.

I have skinny arms too...and chest but bigger legs, my calves are probably as big as the thighs of the guy in the OPs pic (6' 175-180 here). I would like stronger arms but not necessarily bigger...I do fatigue climbing out of the saddle for extended periods...and it ends up being my arms that give up first. Given my choice I'd like to have the build of the guy in the OPs pic. Bring it on.

I've also known rail-thin guys who were super strong. Amazingly so in fact that you wonder sometimes why the big bulky guys can't lift Volkswagons or something.

Right now it is only a personal requirement.

I didn't mean getting picked on by other bikers.

No, actually football players have to be able to move themselves very quickly. Ever wonder why a 40 time (or 10 yard time for linemen) is often the most important stat when evaluating players? Would you consider a college or NFL corner or safety at 6' and 200 to be bulky and slow?
