I'm thinking of getting some fenders for my bike and wonder which ones would work best if any at all. I know it's not a Touring bike but I would like to keep the water off of me. The bike is my Shogun 700.....

If you are ok with plastic fenders SKS 45mm black or silver would look good on that bike and they are pretty cheap from Rivendell ($37). If you want metal fenders, I would recommend the Berthoud Stainless steel fenders from Peter White Cycles ($69). The Berthouds are the best metal fenders IMHO. SO I say YES! to fenders!.

I would use SKS or planet bike fenders on that. I have and like both. The black planet bike fenders would look the best imo.

I have had excellent results with Planet Bike fenders on my Surly Cross Check even in rugged use.

^^ those look like good ones. Black would be cool, or i also second the notion of Silver (plastic) fenders.

I have a love hate relationship with my sks fenders. I love how well they work but I hate the stays. They flop all over the place and never stay put.

The SKS fenders are only $24.99 at Nashbar. You can usually catch a promo discount deal and get them for closer to $20. They are pretty nicely made, and look great.

I have a black bike, and they look "factory" original to me.

You will need to purchase fenders based on tire width, clearance required and type of mounting available on the bike. I doubt the "Hybrid" is what you want for a skinny tire bike.

I'm thinking the same thing - I'm debating whether or not to put fenders on my Nishiki, but with a pink, white, and sky blue bike...steel would look weird, grey would look funky, and black would be odd too...what to do?

What is the general consensus on VO fluted fenders? If I'm running 27x 1 1/4 (32mm) would using their 48mm fenders look stupid? Also, what is the best way to find out what size fenders I could run on my Bianchi Randonneur?

General rule of thumb is that the fenders are 10mm wider than the widest tire you are using. I don't think 48mm fenders would look out of place and they would give you plenty of clearance if debris was picked up by the tire. Just be aware that metal fenders are louder than plastic fenders for this reason. I found that the VO fenders were not as sturdy as the Berthoud fenders I mentioned previously. That said, the Berthoud's only come in the smooth style.

Yeah, fender it! Although I have no experience with them, I think black plastic fenders would look good on your Shogun, OP. However, if it's true that they flap around and such, count me out. I'd paint aluminum fenders black.

Post #16 of this thread shows the 48mm fluted on a Raleigh Alyeska restoration for a good friend. The fork crown daruma bolt, cut as short as it could be, would rub the tire when climbing so we swapped 27x1 1/4 Pasela TGs for the 27x1 1/8 size. All is well. Fender line is great. There isn't too much gap, IMO, and he prefers the ride of the 1 1/8s.

those are cool but its those G-D 'European-inspired Breakaway Brackets' that are also on my SKS fenders that I despise so heartily.

I never have any problems with my old ESGE fenders.

Hmm...Maybe silver or pink...

As far as the breakaways, I've got a set of Zefals with a similar mounting system - I find that they don't hold the supports well, and if they get knocked, I have to shove them back down onto the support so that they're even again. Never had a problem with the clips popping off though.

I've found the clearance to be not quite sufficient if the fenders are only 10mm wider than the tires (measured, not nominal width). Right now my Kog P/R has 52mm VO Zeps over 35mm Paselas, and the clearance (and the look) is "just right". 15mm should do it, and go wider rather than narrower.

I'm wondering if VO's sturdiness issue has to do with the fact that they only use one drawbolt to attach 'em to the stays. This allows the fenders to flex, rattle and fatigue, leading to cracking. I installed mine Honjo-style, with two drawbolts on each fender and they are rock solid: no rub, no rattle, no noise of any kind. Don't have enuf miles on the setup to tell how they'll hold up, but they seem to be the same gauge metal as Honjos, so I'm hopeful.

I've got 40mm stainless Gilles Berthoud on my chrome Paramount (700 x 25c tires), and love 'em. They're relatively light and well designed and executed.

I think black plastic fenders would look best. I have the Planet Bike Hybrid fenders you linked to and I like em fine. They're on my touring bike though, so ymmv as far as fitting them. I would go to your LBS and check some out in person if possible, to get an eye for what would fit your bike best.

I'd try to avoid the ones with built-in splashguards if you can. I have the PB's, and while they're nice fenders, I can't stand the look of the little flippies, now that it's on the bike. I've got a pair of straight fenders (the Zefals previously mentioned), and a pair of the silver SKS fenders, and I like the look of those much, much better.

I've used both SKS (well, mine say Esge, made in W. Germany, so I guess they're a few years old) and Planet Bike plastic fenders. Both are susceptible to minor chatter from time to time but nothing too serious if you set them up well. On one bike I have a piece of cork between the rear fender and the chainstay crosspiece, with the fender bolted. On another bike, the stay crosspiece wasn't drilled so I'm using the stock fender clip. Wrapping the crosspiece with electrical tape made a surprising difference in the noise level.

I prefer the PB fenders. They seem quite strong, the hardware is stout and comes with stainless nylon nuts. However, I'd strongly recommend the Hardcore Road fenders rather than the Hybrid ones on a previous post, as the Hardcore models have 2 struts per side on the rear.
