Odd Ball Vintage Pinarello Montello
I just picked up this Vintage Pinarello Frame. It has ALL the makings of a Montello. EXCEPT the tubeset! NOT SLX.
Some details about the frame:
Internal brake routing in the top tube.
Bottom Bracket shell with gussets.
Cool seat stay caps.
No water bottle braze on/bosses on the seat tube.
No pump peg.
Head badge is a metal plate.
Campagnolo drop outs (rear and fork).
The seat post binder is threaded, the bolt is one piece, not the male/female type.
No GP panto at the seat tube/top tube lug, near the binder bolt.
No GP panto one the front derailleur braze on.
The tube decal says "SLX NEW" But it was applied after the previous owner had stripped the frame down to the chrome base, so I'm not putting much credibility on that.
The last pic is through the slot in the bottom bracket looking up the seat tube... no rifling.
It would be great to get a positive ID on the tubeset and model, but it's not the end of the world if I don't. It's still a cool frame.

Nice looking frame. I love all the chrome look. Wonder if it just SL or Aelle tubing since there is no rifling.

What's the seat post diameter? That would distinguish b/w Aelle and SL/Cromor.
Other Qs: Is the fork steerer rifled? Are any of the main triangle tubes ovalized?

I've seen similiar Pinarellos in Oria tubing. Beautiful bikes too. I'd always give ANY steel Pinarello a good look.

So, I was curious and looked just now. Apparently Indurain's Banesto Pinarello was Oria (apparently stiffer than some of the other tubes they commonly used). The B in the serial # could mean "Banesto" as in replica, which they did a bunch of.

Here's another clue that might be worth mentioning. I had it shipped from Europe (France). That factoid may or may not mean anything. I'm in the US

Interesting. When were the Banesto frames produced? The Campagnolo dropouts generally indicate early '80s, I believe.

I found a set of decals on ebay that show MOD MONTELLO '85 with a SL tube sticker. That set has the seat tube PINARELLO decal down the front of the seat tube and TREVISO-ITALIA on each side.

I just want to say, that's a cool shot through the BB slot.
Also, did you check the downtube for rifling?

Is it possible that the seat tube was damaged and replaced? Without causing damage to the lugs?... Naw... that would definitely leave discoloration.

That's looking great.
As you've seen, SL Montellos do exist, and are a fair bit rarer than their SLX brothers.
The serial number is interesting, it's the early 80's format - X###, so you could maybe argue it's one of the earliest Montellos; 1984. But then again I would have expected it to start with a D.
Keep us updated on progress.

That's a beauty. I love the paint color you chose. The engraved stem and post are really nice touches, too. Nice knowing those decals will have a much longer shelf-life than the originals.
