Day 2 of 3 Ride to the NC Coast
Day 2 Bike Ride to the beach. Today was 90 miles with not many hills from Smithfield to Washington.
While it was a wet day it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. We started in very light rain but it rained pretty steadily the last half of the ride.
A nagging headwind for most of the way (it seemed more noticeable when I was pulling!) made it feel a little tougher especially on tired legs.
We had our first flat today and it was discovered as we were getting ready to leave our first rest stop.
We had a scary incident riding across the bridge into downtown Washington. There are several long sections of metal grating across all 4 lanes. It has an uneven spacing plus it was wet. Several of us started sliding into other riders but we were very, very fortunate everyone stayed upright. We stopped and got off our bikes and walked across the remainder of the grating.
We stopped at a tavern before we headed to the hotel to celebrate getting across that bridge!!
Tomorrow’s forecast looks a little better for the 90 mile ride to Morehead City. Probably a little rain but nice tailwinds.
Stopped at a Tavern before going to the hotel
They had a brown ale!
