Reinstalling Sturmey Archer 3 sp Hub
Hi,
For my 1970 Hercules I spent most of today taking apart SA hub, cleaning, new bearings, grease & reinstalling. My first time doing so after watching videos. Everything seemed good, until..
when I rotate the rear chainring it seems to be tight. I loosen cups a bit, then rotate again, and it gets tight again. Also, the little chain that operates the clutch unscrews itself.
any ideas where I went wrong?
thanks!!

Hard to say with the terms/words used. No rear chainring on a bike that I know of. Rear hub cups are fixed into the rear hub shell, maybe you meant cones?
SA AW (and many IGHs) are best adjusted with a bit of slop in the bearing adjustment, so many internal parts need to freely move about... Also best chain tension is zero tension. SA AW lock nuts (and axle nuts too) can easily be overtightened and thus the threads become damaged. Andy

No, this seems to be the problem. The axle was spinning--when I "tested" the wheel, I just held it in my hands, I didn't attach in the dropouts. Thank you!

Form the axle to spin in your hands, with wheel spin, I would suggest that the axle bearing adjustment is too tight. AWs have an axle with opposing flats on both ends and is easily placed in a bench vise, axle vertical, to make adjusting the bearings a quick and straight forward job. Remember to first set the RH cone all the way on the axle till it stops then back off only enough to allow the lock "washer (the plate with the bent over ends) to engage it. Then tighten the lock nut. This end goes into the vise and the final bearing adjustment is done on the LH end. You want the faintest rock/slop at the rim, to insure the bearings are not too tight, AFTER having tightened down the LH lock nut. Andy

Other than the axle bearings that hub should only have oil in it. If you greased the internal parts you basically glued the hub together and it will not spin well. Roger

Andy, got it. Will do tonight. I appreciate your clarity! Chris

No, I just greased the bearings, not the hub, which I oiled per video of RJ the bike guy. - Chris

I have a 2017 RD3 speed and a RD5w. I think the DS is supposed to be loosened a 1/2 turn.
With my 5w it's 3/8 turn. Both wheels will spin a couple minutes.
I just did my first century on my CCM 3 sp. Over a dozen with my RD5w. LOL
