100£/$ project bike - What would you buy?
You've got 100 £/$ to buy a project bike. What do you buy and why?

The best deal I can find used on Craigslist, OfferUp, or the LBS that suits my particular fancy at the moment, and fits me. If I want something lightweight, I'd add the additional preference of a frame built from name-brand, double-butted tubing.
If you were hoping to hear brand or other more specific recommendations, sorry. Brand = The options are too broad. Type of bike = Doesn't take into account the type of riding you want to do.

I look for fit first, then components and manufacturer. I used to look based on price and then it occurred to me that it takes just as much time to rehab an entry level bike as a mid level or higher end bike so I became more discerning, I had to look harder but I still found deals I just skipped the entry level stuff. I also find that late 80s or early 90s rigid mountain bikes are very nice all around bike when you replace the knobby tires with more urban ones but people seem to be catching on to this. Also look for something scruffy or with issues that you can solve. I also look in June when college kids are leaving and trying to unload bikes or in the winter when no one is buying. YMMV
Trek 850 picked up for $20 back in November with a flat tire and some shifting issues solved both issues sold it on in February.

Still if it were my hundred quid and I lived in the UK, the choice would be easy. I would find an old road bike (60s or even 50s) and turn it into a rider. Those bikes are expensive if in good shape but if you don't mind a bike with some patina and a few hard knocks, you can likely pick up a fabulous project bike at a reasonable price.
There is a thread here were someone picked up a Frejus frame for $40. That's what I'm thinking about.
