Day 1 of 3 Bike Tour
Another great day on the bike with the High Point, NC gang. Today was Day 1 of 3 days of riding 300 miles from High Point to Morehead City which is on the NC coast. We are carrying our essentials but enjoying the luxury of a hotel room at days end.
Great temperatures and our group of 7 rode really well together. Today was 127 miles from High Point to Smithfield, NC with more hills than you might think for Piedmont NC. It was about 5200’ of climbing which wasn’t too bad but we certainly felt it the last 20 miles. But the terrain should really flatten out for the next two days.
Wish us luck tomorrow as Sally is going to throw her best punch at us. Hopefully it will just be lots of rain and no lightning!!! Hopefully we won’t come across any flooded bridges tomorrow. But Excessive water just doesn’t have a lot of places to go when it’s flat.
We got lucky today as we were able to get through 3 different roads where the roads were closed. All 3 were a result of roads being washed out from tons of rain this past spring. A crew was actually working at one of the closures but with some pleading they allowed us to walk our bikes across. 127 miles was plenty enough without having to tack on extra miles for detours!
We all did a good job of masking up at our 3 stops at stores for more fluids.
Tomorrow is only 90 miles but forecasts for more headwinds and LOTS of rain.
My road bike with rear and front bags using Arkel equipment.
Our crew plus an 82 year old who rode to the first rest stop with us. He did the 300 miles last year.
No way to avoid Sally!
Definitely going to rain tomorrow. Hopefully my Showers Pass jacket will help out!
On the road.
Rest stop!

Awesome, I hope you guys fair well with the weather. I can't imagine riding all day in the rain but good call on the hotels. I would think that having to camp after a day of riding might get a bit exhausting!
