Nice bikes so far. I wonder, I see most people leave their shifters in the downtube area...I always retrofit my bikes to have the shifters on the stem...For me, I feel it is so much better as I never really got used to the downtube shifters...However, considering leaving the Peugeot shifters in the downtube area just to give it a try again...

What do you guys feel about that when riding a more upright townie/porteur style bike?

Nice rack though a bit too wide for Dutch bike racks. I would probably put a Pelago commuter front rack M on my next build as it is significantly narrower.
Ah of course...it's a European brand...Very nice...I seen on youtube recently a rack made by Velo Orange that folds down...I thought that was pretty interesting...

I prefer to keep my hands on the handlebar whenever the bike is loaded down. I'd rather have thumb, trigger or bar end shifters. I switched my Univega from thumb to bar end shifters after switching from flat to swept back albatross bars.

I built this '91 Schwinn Crosscut for my Seattle daughter-in-law, complete with a powder-coated frame in her favorite color. It's Shimano 105 equipped, and my boat-building brother helped me fabricate the wood basket attached to the Origin 8 front rack.

Speaking of true porteur bikes, there are a boatload of them on the famous tourist destination of Mackinaw Island, Michigan. With no motorized vehicles allowed on the island, bicycles and horse-drawn carts are the only modes of transportation.

Once a year in early summer they have a bike auction, which often includes a batch of hotel porteur bikes and, although they are well-used, the price and quality are supposedly very attractive.

Neither are remotely vintage, but very, very porteur. Globe Live 3 (blue with belt drive) and Live 2 (black with road bars and Jtek bar-end shifter.)

Very well executed. I hope she's using that sweet machine a lot. Wasn't aware anyone was making such a quality rack as those Origin8, are they recent?

Found this old pic of me and my ol gal back when I was courting my ex-wife, about 20 years ago. An Electra beach cruiser with the rack. Ended up becoming my niece's college bike.

i visited there 25 years ago or so. Rode my son all over the place on a rear seat carrier mounted on a robin hood 3 speed with a very low gear, 40 to 22. It was great passing folks walking expensive mountain bikes up hills with my 40 lb son in tow. It was the best condition ive ever been in. Thing is, the tradesmen on that island have amazing porteuring skills.
