Ive always used converse all stars, but the soul is anything but stiff, they don't keep your feet warm either for you winter riders.
I recently got some one stars as they look a bit warmer, havent tried em out yet.

Before I went clipless I'd ride a 22 mile r/t commute in slip on vans on my fixed. Did that for two semesters, worked fine. I also like like Adidas shell toes and their Stan Smiths. Those are the only two laced shoes I never get caught on the cages/straps.

-1 for vans. I rocked a pair and the sole gave me no support... felt like I was riding without shoes on. I wore shelltoes... FTL They suck major as well. Guess I can't recommend anything good. Except I remember backed when I skated there were some nike sb that had like a wood center too them... Probably way to puffy to fit in toe clips though. I am going to pick up some pumas or better fitting adidas

I can't believe I actually went out, tested out, and then bought Sambas because of this thread. Way better feel in the pedals than Vans slipons, mainly due to the much stiffer sole. (I went from clipless to clips/straps)

haha I went out today and tried some too. They only had the classic style, and I don't know if it's just me, but it seems like the tongue is HUGE on these puppies haha. I also tried the Adidas San Ramons or something and those felt much more comfy.

The tongue is definitely outrageously large for normal wearing since its an indoor soccer shoe, so I just trim the tongue. There's no padding in it so you can't even tell after you do it.

I saw a couple of Macbeth's listed, and as someone who has owned three or four pairs, do not buy them. They are pieces of s h i t and will fall apart in a very short amount of time.
Personally, the best shoes I have worn are Vegetarian Shoes' Panther Sneakers. Putting aside them being a vegan shoe (which, incidentally, a lot of the shoes suggested happen to be too), they are the toughest shoe I have worn. I beat the **** out of my shoes and these have not yet succumbed after a year (I went through three or four pairs of Macbeth's one year).
You'll notice in the pic that they have excellent soles.
Also, you can sleep easy knowing they weren't made in sweatshops (unlike most of the other shoes listed).
