Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

i bend chainstays and cut tubes at a framebuilder. i also bend forks, line lugs, strip paint, and do the crap work. reminds me of when i started at a silk screeners, and i scrubbed and pressure washed silk screens all day.

i cut a $8000 ti bike in half this week. (to install s&s couplings).

i helped clean carbon tubes before we glued them. we then put the new campy super record group on it. 14.5lbs. $10,000+

i make $10,000 carbon/ti frames w $800 paint jobs. i love america.

Drive a forklift and commute 40 mi rt per day by bicycle. Out of 4500 people employed at the factory I'm the ONLY full-time cycle commuter. It's a UAW facility, so you can imagine I'm not real popular w/my auto-centric, union brothers and sisters...especially during lunch when I expressed my opinion(I was pressed...you know how it is when you're a little different...) that it's inexcusable for anyone living within 10 miles of the plant and able-bodied to NOT bike. I sit by myself, alot. Nobody effs w/my bike, though. I used to get ribbed alot, then one day I mentioned something about body fat content, resting pulse rate and blood pressure w/o smiling(because I'd had enough, y'know?)and that pretty much ended the discussion. Once in a while I get someone taking me aside and expressing respect for what I do and I cherish those moments and offer to help get them started. No takers, so far. Some day...

It's been hard this winter as I've only managed a 50% 'ride' rate'. I've had some health issues, but I'm starting up again tomorrow. It's been good reading the posts and threads on BF as it keeps the fires stoked. Thanks guys...and gals.

Very cool, my mom teaches in the occupation therapy department at SJSU.

I'm a full-time student at UCSB graduating this spring in philosophy and psychology. I also work for some apartment complexes owned by the university, basically being like an on-site property manager which sucks but pays my rent. I also run an organization that puts on concerts around UCSB. It doesn't pay too well but its worth it to plan and run some pretty big concerts (some of them get like 8,000 people). I'm looking to get into the live music business once I'm done here.

I was a waiter and did bike deliveries on the side, but now am unemployed. It turns out both my bosses were smarmy poop heads trying to pinch every penny and take advantage of their employees. So now, until I find another job, I am a volunteer mechanic at the local bike co-op.

I look at a monitor all night long. If I see something blinking red, I pick up the phone and wake up somebody... "ur sh1t broke, fix it", and wrote it down on a piece of paper... "teh sh1t broke, at 1am, I called joe blow and told him to fix it".

That's pretty much it. The tricky part is to know which joe you gonna call. The network joe, the DBA joe, the developer joe, the unix admin joe, the backup joe, the windows joe, the app support joe, the web developer joe, the system integration joe... and sometimes is a false alarm and you don't call any joe. Ergo BA degree in Computah Science and 5 Year exp (or equivalent) is required... among other stuff.

I just graduated from college on Friday.
I currently sell sheets at the mall and detail UPS delivery trucks.
I'm a graphic designer but am unable to get a job in the field (PM me for freelance work, I'm good and cheap [like an experience hooker]...please?!?)
I'm also currently working on writing a novel, a series of short stories, and another book.

I'm also studying Graphic Design, it has it's difficulties, but what job hasn't? I listen to music every second of the day, but I just try use that as inspiration, and keep cycling/music playing as a hobby so I can't get tired of them too!

Got 3ish more years left, and working in a call centre until I begin my career. Thinking about ditching the C. centre and trying to get by with freelance work, but it's hard to keep busy when it ain't a full time career!

Did a course in photography aswell, so the whole media area is where I see myself going!
