I cannot quite tell if the fork in the picture has the mid-fork brase-ons or not. Most of the earlier Schwinns had them, but they seemed to go away about 1987ish.

I do not have any replacement forks with the mid-fork braze-ons. Sorry.
Thats useful information. What is KOM? I imagine these builds kept constantly evolving to keep pace with parts&stock like Stumpjumper.

I notice many more sierras for sale on eBay. It makes sense they were more affordable. This Cimarron reminds me of a Stumpjumper. Ive had 2 87s an 1 88 in the 22 size. The weight was about the same. The last stumpy I sold was a 87. I ended up selling just the frame/fork/headset& brakes. Im going to use the fd/rd/crank/wheel set for this Cimarron frame. I think the mid blade threaded brazeons are the best feature of vintage bikes.

of all 3 stumpys weve had they all had subtle differences.

let me ask you this: when you would assemble your Schwinns for the sales floor did you have to install the headset races? Or were they sent preinstalled? Same question for the bottom bracket?

KOM was "King of the Mountain" it basically replaced the Cimarron as Schwinn's top of the line MTB offering. It did not last long...a year or two before it moved to Paramount branded.

The Schwinn bikes, like most brands, came boxed, as they do today. Assembly included front wheel, handlebars, saddle/Seatpost, pedals. Sometimes the grips on mountain bikes were not installed, and we had to slip the brake levers and shifters on the bars as well...depended upon the brand. Things were close to adjusted, but we often had to fine tune things. We had to install the reflectors too.

Headsets came installed and adjusted on all bikes except the special orders (3Rensho, Serottas, etc). I do not recall ever having to adjust any of them out of the box.
