Stinner Refugio

Has anyone ridden or owned a Stinner Refugio? They are built in Santa Barbara Ca.

They look super nice, but might be more race and road oriented than adventure.

Refugio ? STINNER

Looks a pretty rare bird. $3k for the steel frameset: Yowzer

Clearance is pretty standard.

Chainstay length is little shorter than normal. Frame length a little longer than your average, so I suppose its leaning a bit toward 'race' geo.

Stinner is an odd one for me. It's custom frame money for fancy off-the-rack. I'm clearly not the target market-- my current frameset cost less than a Stinner paintjob.

I don't understand why the British can make frames with high end steel without resorting to the far East at affordable prices but US builders are always charging ridiculous money. Reynolds 853 frames made in the UK are quite the commonplace nowadays at a third of the cost of this Stinner.

$3100 for a steel frame and cf fork with off-the-shelf sizing?

For less than that, you can go full custom from a builder that will actually tell you which variety of steel they're using.

Pretty much any frame builder will do a full custom steel frame + cf fork for a bit less money. The only exceptions would be the really famous individuals like Richard Sachs. Just look around.

Another poster mentioned that his Stinner is mad of True Temper Platinum OX, which is good stuff. But the price is still too high.

If it was actually True Temper Platinum OX you'd think they would advertise that.

I am actually more interested in their Ti bikes. Still pricey, but not as much so in the scheme of high end ti bikes, I suppose.

Yeah, the premium costs of US-based steel builders as compared to UK-based builders (even with exchange rate) is crazy.

I had an 853 steel, lugged frame built up exactly to my specifications for less than $2200 USD (shipped) and that was with their top tier paint package. The actual frame was less than $1700 (exchange + shipping)
