New Touring Build: Gary Fisher
Here's my latest tourer build. A mid-90's Gary Fisher, still made in USA. Wheels repacked, trued and tensioned. Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires, New cables, derailleurs, shifters.
Brooks C17 Cambium saddle, Velo Orange Tourist handlebars, ESI Extra-Chunky grips.
The racks are Sunlite Gold Tec HD. Cheap. Look nice. I can always swap them out later.
I had fun doing this build. I'm not sure if I will sell it or not. This bike represents what we've been saying all along in that you can build yourself a sweet bike, but it'll cost ya. I doubt I could sell this bike for more than I have into it. Still, it'll be a pleasant-riding bike for those rainy days here in New England... like today!

Looks incredibly clean, I like the silver racks and fenders. I've gotta give the upright bars a try sometime.

It's original paint. All I did was go over it with some quick detail spray, and I clean it real good and put some armor all on it. There are a couple scuffs here and there, but the bike was pristine - obviously kept inside. When I'm looking for bikes, I'm always on the lookout for a bike that has not spent much of its life outside. Its easy to tell, really. Look at the vent holes in the frame, such as the ones that usually appear on the chain stays near the dropouts. If there is no rusty residue in those holes, then you are probably gtg. Also check any steel hex socket fasteners - if rusty, its either been kept outside or a damp place.

As said- killer paint, at least from picture distance.
The rear rack has some wild lines to it. Where does the pannier's lower hook or lever attach?...it looks like one gentle curve and bothing solid to hook onto.

Missed that the first time, but a couple hose clamps around a bit of cut up tube could make a nice stop for anyone using S-hooks on the bottom.

Hey- sometimes a bike, or a component, is more for form than function. Totally get that. Like i mentioned- the lines of that rack are pretty wild- makes for a cool look. If you can only mount stuff up top on it, then thats just whats its for- to look good and hold something specific.

From what I can see in the pics, all the cable housing is properly run and secured in cablestops. Looks like its well built and ready to sell, at least from camera distance.

Yeah...i recable basically every bike I refurbish and after a few short test rides around the block the cables have been adjusted enough between on the stand and after use. I cant imagine riding each bike 250miles, but i guess call me irresponsible.
Ill note that bike shops dont ride the bikes they set up for 250miles either before sale...

I'm picking up what you're laying down, brother, but I'll probably slap a ride or two on it if it doesn't sell soon. When I build a new bike, I treat it like a car that's just rolled off the car carrier: every mile put on it makes it less-than-new.
