Monty Python, The Cyling Tour

Can anyone figure out what kind of bicycle Michael Palin is riding in The Cycling Tour? It has a half-chromed fork and appears to have a cotterless crank of some kind. Maybe a TA?

Has a Motoish look to it. Looks like a PIVO or ATAX stem and I think I can almost make out an 'M' decal on the seat tube?

My second favorite line: "How do you know so much about cycling?"

Now and then someone asks about methods of shortening a pump (usually a Silca Impero) to fit their frame. I like to send them to this shop in North Cornwall, that advertises "We Shorten Pumps While-U-Wait":

Inspired lunacy...

On a whim I googled on "python" "inspired lunacy" (exact phrase) and got 41,000 hits, so I guess that phrase stuck in my head for a reason.

I guess it's a cottered crank, isn't it? Those multiple bands on the frame tubes look like those foil/mylar things Dawes used to use, among others.

It's interesting that the seatpost is way too low, given that Palin is standing flatfooted with his ass on the saddle. I guess he never had to ride it very far at one go before crashing again. I'm not quite sure how he kept catching his trouser leg on the pump when it's all the way up on the top tube--would have made more sense if it was on the seat tube or down tube.

So are those pumps shortened to metric or imperial lengths?

Bloody Central Services -- they've gone back to metric without telling us.....

I believe it's a Carlton (Cobra, perhaps?) with the full chrome / acrylichrome finish.

Nice! A plausible answer. It doesn't even matter if it's right--it sounds like it could be right.

Of course I live about ten miles from a formerly desolate crossroads called Short Pump, VA. Well, it was like that when I moved here twenty one years ago. Now it's suburban mall development hell, at the point where I-295 meets I-64 west of Richmond.

Man! Amazing work, bertinjim. That does indeed look right! It looks like a Williams crank I guess--or maybe it's a Nicklin--and the obligatory Allvit RD. It even has the same same saddlebag. What's that, maybe a Carradice Cadet?

"Downtown Short Pump" used to be a joke, but the mall and surrounding development has made it a nightmare come true.
