Your Weekend Ride Reports -- June 1-2

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

June 1 is the first day of winter in Australia (or southern Australia), and it seemed like a good day on which to scheduled a 400K as a part of a Super Randonneur series held in northern Tasmania. This year, we're hosting rather than riding and we had 3 brave riders tackle the course. All 3 finished well within time after riding through a beautiful day with highs around 15C and a very chilly night with lows around 1C. We had a clear blue sky (and black with lots of stars at night) and, unusually, no wind!!

In the middle of their ride, we were able to get in a shorter ride of our own. Who could pass up a clear blue sky, relatively warm temps and no wind!

Distance: 32.29km
Elevation: 174m
Moving Time: 1:39:31
Elapsed Time: 1:53:11
Speed: Avg: 19.5km/h | Max: 35.6km/h

I'll post some photos a little later.

The ride was on my Hasa Ti bike that has actually been on my trainer at home for quite a while. But it was built as my randonnee bike, and I fully understood why on the ride Machka talks about. I might have to fiddle a little with a slightly wider handlebar and getting it slightly higher, but apart from that, it showed the true titanium quality in a Taiwanese-made bike frame.

And the area we rode has become my favourite for terrain, scenery and nice drivers. Couldn't ask for anything more.

And now it has started pouring rain. Machka must have the best upstairs connections to make sure yesterday and early today were so good weather wise, and now when the time limit is finished, it turns unpleasant for riding.

Saturday - Legs were flat but I still knocked out my normal 25 mile loop. Beautiful day out and while I usually ride fast on the De Rosa it was nice to just cruise along on it for once.

Just under 80 miles. Over to the coast then south to Moss Landing where I turned inland went around Elkhorn Slough and back to Watsonville and then back home. Really good wind at my back most of the way home from there.

Group ride, 45 miles Friday.
Waited too long to get started Saturday, rained out afternoon.
And 24 solo miles Sunday. Trying a new-to-me old 13-26 Suntour freewheel. Mostly good, easier for seated climbing, but not quite as smooth and quiet as the SunRace 13-25 I've used for more than a year.

Pretty good weekend.

Elephant Rock, 100 miles, absolutely awful wind. Lower average speed than a big day in the mountains (triple bypass)

Sunday: First century of the year. Rode the June Dairy Days Classique out of West Salem, WI (~68 miles) with a nice moderate group, plus a loop to and from the ride for a total of 100.7 miles and 4,583'.

Finally got my first real ride in a little over 60 miles might seem alot to some but before I broke my neck last November it was a routine route . At least 2 or 3 times a week .but at least the riding is getting easier just sucks not being able to get in the drops at all and had to put 30 degree stems on all my road bikes to help with keeping me more upright

It is a rare day that I get to use the word 'cold' in Queensland. It does make a nice change. I can't be 169% sure of the distance since my Garmin died and it's replacement hasn't arrived yet. I'm guessing it was somewhere around 115km.

Kick ass weekend of riding.

106k ride at Flying Wheels on Saturday - man I love that ride. I would have gone the 100mi but Mrs. NoWhammies wasn't feeling that great and I had committed to riding with her.

70k on Sunday. Nothing but hill climbing. Weather was brilliant and I has home in time to spend the afternoon relaxing in the sun.

Yesterday I went out and rode 48 miles to celebrate my 48th birthday and I also hit 48MPH going down a short but steep section. With all those numbers aligning, I've got to have a good year!

Tuesday did my evening ride for 26 miles. Saturday was taken up with helping my daughter move out of her apartment. I probably sweated off 10 pounds. Sunday even though I was a little sore, I got in a 43 mile loop to Clearwater and back.

Sounds familiar. A 2001 car wreck left me with six cracked vertebrae and permanently damaged C2. It's taken a lot of years of self-directed and clinical physical therapy to regain enough flexibility to try a drop bar road bike again by 2017.

Then I was hit by a car last year, with a fresh shoulder injury and aggravation of the old neck injury. I've been back in clinical PT for five weeks and just the past week finally feel like I'm making progress.

If I'd gone by my instincts 2-3 weeks ago I'd have quit PT. It didn't seem to be doing any good at all, and sometimes felt worse. But the fourth week was the turnaround point.

I still can't stay in the drops or aero bar for too long -- usually 1-3 minutes at a time, not good enough to get back into time trial competitions. But that depends on the road conditions, tires, etc. On smooth pavement I can handle the drops longer. On chipseal, after about 30 seconds my brain is rattling.

I'm often making minor adjustments to bar height, angle of the levers, stem swaps to adjust reach, etc. But with PT I'm gradually adapting to the bike rather than the other way around. For now. Subject to change with weather, age and whim.

Yes I had the 5 upper bones broken and fusion surgery with a rod thank God seems to be healing good tho not too much pain while riding on the hoods but need to stand alot. Too have a better vision of traffic coming up at lights . Also don't know if u use them but mirrors seem to be a godsend for me anyway have one on the helmet and one u put on the drop bar don't or should say can't use the drops .So doesn't get in the way .as for physical therapy went for a few weeks but got really expensive my accident was a hit and run driver who hit me from behind .And I don't drive so had no insurance to pay for the physical therapy but like u said for me didn't seem to help to much most of what I did there I do at home . Still have a long way to go but hoping to get my first century ride in for the season by the end of summer .just hope there are no setbacks with the healing process

Sunday, no ride, spent all day in an airplane flying home from Italy.
Saturday, left the hotel in Arsie and rode 3 miles to see the Giro come by on their way out of Feltre. rode to have a lunch, and then cut across the route to Croce d'Aune to see the riders as they got near the finish of the stage. rode down to Predavena (it was fun descending the mountain with literally thousands of other bikers at speeds over 30 mph) and had a birra at a brewery across the street from the team buses. watched the pros as they mingled with the ordinary folks riding from the finish to the bus area. then blasted down the mountain some more to the hotel and packed the bike away for the flight the next morning!
