Odd BB trouble
Hi all,
I met a new - to me, at least - issue installing a cartridge BB yesterday.
After two turns, the fixed ”cup” didn’t want to go any further with reasonable force. So I backed it out and cleaned the threads. The thread-cleaning tool went in just fine, hardly even finger tight. Tried again. Stop after two turns.
Backed out, tried another BB. Went in fine.
Pushed the plastic sleeve that serves as the fixed cup off the 1st BB. And guess what, separately it fit just fine.
Anyone encountered something similar?
Now, I have to decide whether to scrap this BB, find a way to press it in, or sand out the inner diameter some.

Assuming this is a square tapered cartridge, the words "plastic sleeve that serves as the fixed cup" is confusing. Often these BBs come with a threaded plastic sleeve (RH thread) on the non-drive side where the adjustable cup would be on a cup and cone bearing.
I have run into the adjustable ring binding on the installed cartridge. Try loosening the fixed (drive) side a fraction of a turn and see if the adjustable ring turns freely. The shell or cartridge may be slightly out of tolerance.
If you modify the adjustable ring, you might introduce unwanted play which can give an annoying creaking noise.
