Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I do not do the pastry eating at the end of my group rides. There is an argument to be made that I would be faster if I did.

What tires do you like on the odyssey? We got some Michelin's last time, but the fronts are already gone. I need to replace them all in a few months.

These are Bridgestone Turanza tires that came on my 2019. I only have 19,000 miles on them and can’t really say except that this is the second flat. The other was a nail and was plugged.

Must be it.

Once, the wife of one of my Bermuda crewmates was gushing to my daughter about how nice I was and how funny. Daughter, who is one of the world’s great deadpan wits, answered, “He’s funny.”

Any opinions on packable vests vs packable jackets?

I have a vest that I love (other than the fact that it's getting to be a little big on me) but have been considering a lightweight jacket. Any preferences one way or another? Or, if you have both, how do you determine which will be worn/brought on a particular ride?

I am big on vests. They have a better warmth to bulk ratio than jackets.

I'm with Jerry Seinfeld on vests.

Current jacket is a Helly Hansen shell. Mine's about 3 years old, closest to the current Loke shell. Doesn't seem as durable as HH or Marmot shells I've had in the past, but pretty comfy, pretty nice breathability/rain resistance ratio. Long pit zips. Packs into its pocket to about the size of a squished grapefruit, or a small can of red bull with the right compression bag.

Main downside is it has no inner liner, so that Helly Tech plastic feels weird on your skin when you're not wearing long sleeves underneath.

Agree. Vest plus arm warmers is more versatile than jacket.

2 questions:

1. is the picture below a through axle or standard QR?

2. When applying lube to my 11 speed chain, how do I know when I am back where i started without counting the links? My 9 speed chain had that special link that made it easy.

Look for the oil-wet links. When you see them, you are back where you started. There are 11-speed chains with master links.

re: chain question

I was looking for a better answer, but I am not blaming either of you.

It seems the technological advances are not really advances.

I am now fully in the @BillyD camp and blame "big bike".

And yet, somehow, I’m feeling blame. Maybe shame. The internet is a hard place.

Okay, how about a dab of nail polish or break the chain and put in a master link?
