Look again carefully, I'll screencap for you here - it appears the seller added some other pics after-the-fact.

Compare here, does this look like the same sticker to you? Left decale in their first two auction pics shows a 90s decal with horizontal text, purple writing under, big clunky green numbers above. The right-hand pic shows an earlier logo decal from the same auction photos:

(but still, did Sears really have someone build them a cottered-crank, stamped-dropout Reynolds 531 bike? how weird)

Confirmed, eBay tracks edits on all auctions. Link: https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...p2047675.l2569

Okay, I was going just on the close-up. Yeah, that's two different bikes. Adds a whole new smell to the ad.

Even worse, I think it's the same bike involved, note the black zip tie on the white cable housing in all the photos. Almost looks like the seller put on a more modern water-slide decal for auction ... but why? Why would anyone add to the questionability of the bike when the original decal wasn't cracked and split like they normally get after a couple decades? (which is also suspect, why wasn't the original decal dicked up like it normally would be after that much time?)

And I'm still sitting here asking myself, why in the world would Sears actually contract someone to build a 531 frame with a cottered crank and stamped dropouts yet not bother with the fork decal? It's an illogical example of spendy-cheap-cheap-cheap. And with no signs of a fork blade decal, maybe is main-triangle 531 only, which is the only explanation that could possibly fit for me given the DO and crankset? But you're right, still doesn't smell quite right either way.

It's stuff like this that doesn't quite sit right with me. And yet another reason I don't like the auction site much anymore. Auctions like this don't help much either, but at least they edited their auction to acknowledge the damage.

52cm Rene Herse on eBay in Iowa for a pretty low price, $2100 plus free shipping.

Cons: Period incorrect repaint. No derailleurs or original racks.

Pros: The repaint looks like a decent one, even if not faithful to a '1945' Herse. It comes with Herse cantilevers, stem, and cable hangers.

I'm tempted as it's probably the lowest price I'll ever see for a Herse, but I don't like that it's a repaint.

I certainly get your temptation here...it's a cool bike, and imperfections are reflected in price.

If it was a 62, I'd be in a lot of trouble right about now.

Very disappointing that a shop thinks this is the way to go on this, they know what they have and chose to crap out on it, lazy, greedy, irresponsible and sad IMO.
.

Still very cool and were it my size, I would be having a very heated discussion with them.

Nice presentation, this guy could teach a class in making a fairly nondescript bike (though nice) seem like something very very special. From a sales perspective, he really milks every possible angle, and then some. Photos are tiny though.

Fausto Coppi(??) on FaceBook

I dont know how to screen grab.....the ad reads "Fausto coppi 1961 race bicycle...Bought in England in the 1950s shipped to us Fausto coppi light weight race bike"
Wait a minute.....it was bought in the 1950s but built in the 1960s? And the head badge reads "Youngs Handbuilt Lightweights"
What?

Early MTBs were deceptively huge. That size is probably correct, depending on how they measured.

Did you see the $575 Colnago? Needs a new paint job but that's pretty reasonable for a complete bike. Could be a fun DIY winter resto project.
