Good ride today. -1C with a stiff 40K headwind. I changed my route today to use some main drags rather than sloppy side street. Yesterday on the way home I was stopped behind a car at a light. The driver must have told the rear passenger to look at the guy on the bike out the back window. She couldn't take her eyes off me. I would say she must have liked what she saw but I know what I look like in full gear. Kind of a freak on wheels. Maybe I should have told her to stop starring cuz she was freaking me out. Or I could have made a face at her like I do to my two year old at home when I want her to laugh.

It’s currently a balmy 41F! Unfortunately I will have an 18mph headwind on the way home… after pushing a 7mph headwind on the way to work! I’m tempted to switch tires back to my slicks, after the last two thawing days there isn’t much snow/ice on the roads.

Yesterday the janitor at work was shoveling snow from various areas. He went out with a jacket, hat and gloves. I saw him outside an hour later and he was down to a sleeveless shirt, hat and gloves!

No commute Monday as I came down with a sore throat & cough over the weekend. Its been working through our office since Thanksgiving & can be bad so I took the day off & just laid around feeling sorry for myself with all the sunshine outside. It was quite foggy & 42F Tuesday morning, went to work but I drove again. Felt much better by lunchtime, the fog was lifting & the roads were dry so I rode back to work on the Torelli. Felt good get some fresh air into my lungs & get loosened up. It was 51F with a few sprinkles on the way home & I took a detour out to Group Health so I could pick up a prescription for my wife. encountered much more traffic in the neighborhood around the clinic but its flat & I negotiated my way there with no problems since most vehicles were moving about my speed. It's in the mid-20s (F), snowing like crazy, traffic is just disgusting. I helped push some guy in his Jeep off the ice at Washington & Tremont. Paint me self-righteous.

Fine, thanks for asking. The only thing, my mechanical problems continue. I fear the winter has taken its toll on my drive train. My chain is slipping in the top three cogs, which is a real pain coming off a stop, killing my knees. Guess I will have to break down and buy a new chain and maybe cassette. Argh. This after having two rims fail within the past month. I built this bike in Feb 2003 out of used parts and have ridden it about every day since so guess it is due for an overhaul.

Rained last night so the streets were wet. And it was surprisingly warm so I had to slow down and open the pit vents on my jacket lest I become wetter on the inside than outside.

Thanks VR, feeling much better today while some of my co-workers are still out sick or suffering at work. I think regular commuting kept me in some kind of "healthy" zone & let me recover faster. It was 43F at 6AM today, 53F in the afternoon. Streets were dry all morning & I switched bikes at lunchtime which was fortunate because when I arrived home this afternoon, I noticed the Grand Jubile had developed a flat rear tire. Must have picked up something close to home. Best place to get a flat is in the garage but I'm beginning to see a pattern here. Flatted on 1/12, 1/19, 1/26 so far this year. FLAT WEDNESDAY??? There were a few sprinkles on the way home this afternoon, just enough to get the Torelli dirty when I went down to the LBS after work for a checkup & adjustment. Bill gave me 2 Torelli logo water bottles! How bout that?

The commute back home today was a walk. The trusty fixie commuter got a flat outside the office today. I could have called a neighbor to come get me, but instaed decided to walk the 1.5 miles home.

The ride home last night was a blast: 65°F and a beautiful sunset! I rode my backup bike ('81 Takara) for the first time today. I can see that I will have to swap out some parts to make it comfortable to use very much. Happy trails!

3F with a slight headwind... A month ago I comforted my wife's fears for my livelihood by agreeing to not bike when it's below 10F... But it's promising to be a very nice day!!! My toes were my biggest concern… a pair of toesties and booties over my SPDs and I was good to go. They started getting cold the last 10 minutes of my commute… close to perfect.

about 20F/-7C Felt good except when I rode on a dirt road that was never plowed. The few tire tracks had turned to ice after yesterdays warming temps. When I hit the ice tracks I new I was doomed, too much speed. Tried to leave the tracks for the snowy middle but the bike didn't want to follow. Down we went and boy did I slide down the ice. No injury though.

BillH from MO: Your heat you sent only lasted a copule of hours. Try to do better next time. It did clear up a lot of the road shoulders.

Chilly one today. Something like 6f plus decent wind. I went straight for the snowboarding pants and tossed the sweater for a coat this morning. Warm and toasty the whole way. I suppose the toes could have been a touch warmer, but I'm not complaining.

It was 2F/-17C this morning, I must have had some moisture in my shifter cables from my last ride so I had a one speed all the way in this morning, hmmm... I brought it in the building so it should be okay for the ride at lunch and home this afternoon. Clear skys and a pretty sunrise.
