Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A Chamois Epiphany

When a chamois goes bad, it can go really bad.

I went on a 40-ish mile ride on a hot day last week, wearing my lightly used team bibs, made by Voler in the mid-2000s. Here's that pad:

After the ride, the inside of both legs were rubbed raw. Ouch! It was that darn flat seam stitching between the black pad and the gray material. Even though I used plenty of chamois cream, the stitching on a hot ride was like sandpaper.

Over the next two rides, I pulled on brand new bibs, also made by Voler. They call this new pad "Orion", and the big difference is that it is seamless:

Wow! What a difference, no more raw skin. Lesson learned, the old bibs are headed to the landfill, and I'll never skimp on the cost of quality bibs again.

Anybody have a similar "road to Damascus" moment with their bibs/shorts?

Yup, I have some cheaper bibs that I don't touch anymore since switching to Castelli Free Aero Race bibs. No issues with 6+ hours in the saddle.

My problem with my one set of Assos bibs is that they are a touch too small. Or maybe they aren't small and they're just designed to fit more snugly.
