Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling/Exercise/Sports Reports - July 1/2/3/4

It's a long weekend in Canada and the US. Happy Canada Day!! Happy ... US Day? Independence Day? So, to celebrate the long weekend, where are you riding? Are you doing any special events? Will you be riding solo or with family and friends?

Yes, this post is a little bit early, but tell us about your plans for the weekend ... and then tell us what you did. Show us pics if you've got them.

We've been back on our bicycles this week, doing a bit of cycling on the east coast of Taiwan. As for this weekend, today we're flying into Japan, and if all goes well, we'll spend several days cycling around Hokkaido.

It's been over 100 degrees for the last few days, and will be for about 5 more. I haven't ridden since Wednesday, and I'm itching to get out. It's 104 right now so I might just wait until the sun goes down...

I've set a monthly mileage goal this year of 200/month. As of yesterday I had 290, so I rewarded myself by sleeping in until 8 and taking a short 23 mile ride to finish off the month. I typically ride 300+ miles in a month once each year...hopefully I'll have a few more this year. My annual goal is 2000 miles and I'm at 1,230, so I'm certainly on pace to exceed that. Last year I rode 1,600 miles, so this will represent quite a jump. My next ride opportunity will be the morning of the 4th...followed by a BBQ and fireworks that night.

I did 55 miles with my normal group yesterday. First time I have finished a ride at over a 20mph average after being off the bike the last three years.

Today I went out to do a solo 2.5 hour training ride and flatted at the 2:00 mark in the pouring rain. A fellow cyclist pulled up in his truck right I was putting the bike back together and asked if I wanted a ride. The tire was releasing a bit of air out of a small cut and I wasn't certain whether it had cut the tube again or whether it was just trapped air between the tube and tire, so I decided to play it safe and reluctantly hitched a ride with him.

Planning on doing a metric century charity ride on the 4th.

I rode with the bike shop ride that I used to ride with all the time Saturday morning. One guy and one lady there were planning to ride farther, so I rode with them, and we got in 67 miles or so, but not before the guy endoed on a pot-hole and broke his collar bone.

Then Saturday night, I went up to Denison for the 200k overnight brevet. We started at 8:00 PM, and got back in about 6:30 this morning. Five of us rode. I had one flat, and one of the other guys had a seatpost break, so it wasn't altogether uneventful.

That's funny... I also did the Alta Alpina and my Garmin died at 194.66 (vs. Strava saying 194.7 for yours). Maybe just some bad vibes in that spot.

Rode a 230k perm on the tandem today, I was having problems with muscle cramps the last 30 miles, otherwise, a good outing.

Saturday, rode with the group from Ballast point down bayshore to Davis Island, around downtown Tampa, and then back down Bayshore to Ballast point. Great scenery.

Sunday did beaches and bridges. Started in St. Armonds circle, rode onto Siesta key, into and around Sarasota, and back onto Lido key/St. Armonds. Beautiful ride, but misearbly hot, and trying to get over the Ringling bridge at the end just about did me in.

Yes, I rode on July 4th, In a semi-social group ride out to picnic island and back. Sorry, I didn't manage to take pictures. Picnic island is this little out of the way boat dock/dog beach/park that used to belong to Macdill AFB but was given over to the City of Tampa when the base restructured. It's right on Tampa Bay.

Nice ride. But of course is wasn't social lol. No group of roadies can ever have just a truly social ride.

All in all, a great time riding.

I was going to ride 236km on Independence day, but it was too hot. I started at comfortable 75 deg, and finished when it was about 110. I got a flat at mile 10, first in about 18-20 months, and used my only CO2 cartridge. Almost got caught by parade, but I was faster. Mostly all stores were closed along my usual route, the only one was open with Indian owner. The ppl buying boxes of beer looked at me feeling sorry as I paid for my bottle of energy drink. I did about 76 miles. So I can say it was in "Spirit of '76"
