Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling Ride Reports - February 9/10/11

Middle of February, and a holiday weekend for some: https://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/ including Family Day weekend in Canada. Where are you cycling this weekend? Are you cycling with a group or solo? Doing any special events? What are the cycling conditions like where you are? Or are you cycling inside, weightlifting, or doing snowsports?

We arrived back in Victoria, just north of Melbourne, a week ago today. That day was the last coolish day we had. It has been hot and even hotter all week ... over 30C, and for 3 days it was over 35C.

We've been swimming in the local outdoor pool, and waiting till later in the afternoon (when the sun goes down a bit) to go for a bicycle ride, but we got several rides in this week.

This weekend is supposed to be slightly cooler (down to about 30C again), so hopefully we'll be able to get a couple decent rides in, and hopefully at least one swim.

The warmth is supposed to continue next week as well. It's lovely, but it is a bit to get used to after spending Christmas and early January in Canada.

As for today, Friday, Rowan did a little bit of cycling, but I just did a bit of walking.

Saturday - Rowan and I got out for a really nice warm early evening ride of 31.39 km.

That's the longest distance we have ridden since we left Canada.

Happy Chinese New Year - in the Chinese zodiac cycle, this is the fire snake year - so health, wealth, money, gold, and lots of friends, good food, and good drink - and lots of great riding miles - to you all.

Saturday - it was not so hot (80 F) but really humid (75 RH) when I stared my ride at 715. I rode the first 83 km solo and nonstop at a very good average speed in 2 hr 50 min and decided that I wanted to finish at least 100 km. Although the wind had picked up, I was doing fine until I suddenly hit a wall even though I had been drinking a lot (1 L per hour) and ate half a pb&j sandwich (at hour 2.5) on the bike. It was a respectable bonk - I felt queazy and my heart was racing. So, I got off the bike and closed my eyes and did a controlled breathing exercise for about five minutes. Then, I finished the remainder 17 km in 45 min! In post ride analysis, I think the bonk was either due to the heat and humidity (90 F and 70 RH at 1000) because the sweat was not evaporating fast enough to cool me off and/or my 4 hour of sleep the night before the ride. Hmm - I guess I need my sleep.

Sunday - today is the first day of the Chinese New Year so I am taking my family out - no riding today though I will try to get on the trainer later.

Mark

Did another 8 minute test on trainerroad. My FTP went up from 198 to 225! Some of that is due to learning how the 8 minute test works (took it in 14 Dec '12) and some of it is doing a lot of intervals and spin class. I'll never get a gain like that in only 2 months ever again. I've put in probably 350 miles or so since my initial test.

Edit:
Dec test: https://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/126536
Saturday's test: https://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/207402

Going to rest today.

Sunday - 29.65 km in the local area, heading the other direction this time. A little cooler today, only about 25C, and quite windy.

68 miles, 7,000' climbing yesterday. Supposed to be group ride, but ended up mostly a group of one, which meant a steady aerobic pace.

Stunning views from top of Mt. Tamalpais.

got out both days this weekend, which was a first for me in MONTHS.

saturday went out kind of last minute, as i slept quite late, and when i went to run some garbage out to the bin, it was amazing outside, warmer than forecasted. or so i thought. my thermometer outside my door (old school mercury one) said 48*. apps on my phone said 34-35*. i didnt care. got with a buddy who had already went out in the morning, he was up for rd 2. we did 40 miles with an average temp of 38*

https://ridewithgps.com/trips/1128337

then today was the ride i was looking forward to. forecasted high of 50, but wasn't supposed to hit that until 2pm, which is when we ended. it was a chilly ride, but we had 7 in our group, so it was more relaxed not having to pull myself all day . avg temp 45*. starting to get back up to comfortable temps to ride in. looking forward to not having to wear a jacket anymore.

Friday: Rain turning to snow, wing gusting to 55mph - no ride

Saturday: Snow on the ground, so we went MTB riding, and had a lot of fun finding roots under the snow. One of my roadie friends had just bought a new Scott mtb and this was his first time out. He was clipped in when he hit something and rolled off the trail into a creek. He came off the bike as he fell and went backwards through the ice. Being a good sport, he accepted various upper garments and gloves fro the rest of us, changed and continued riding. It'll be easier when we can see the ground again!

Sunday: Morning ride cancelled due to icy roads and temp of 15F...went to spin class instead.

Saturday - was a casual and easy ride with a bike club. 12.5 miles that I used as a recovery ride after have three days of very strong headwinds on 3 consecutive 35 mile rides.

Sunday - was a team ride with my cycling team as we are getting ready to participate in our 4th MS-150 ride. The MS-150 is held around the Orlando area and there are plenty of rolling hills that are on the route. Had to drive about an hour to get to an area with some hills to train on as it's very flat in my part of Florida. Hills and 20+ mph winds made for an interesting 25 mile ride.

Monday - not sure I will ride today. I have the A/C service people coming over for quarterly maintenance. Yes, we have used our air conditioners for most of this winter, here in Florida.
