We went adapters - then the conversion BB. IMO the adapters are inferior to a BB30 setup and the conversion BB (Wheels MFG) are superior to a standard BB30 as they kick the bearings out another 10 mm. My son and his teammate both say they feel that. Praxis also makes a conversion adapter but I'm told it puts pressure on the interior of the BB chamber, while Wheels Mfg uses the threads.

Wheels Mfg makes adapters (https://wheelsmfg.com/bb-pf30-univers...no-cranks.html) and BB conversion kit (https://wheelsmfg.com/products/bottom...-outboard.html). The wheels Mfg adapters came with the bike. I purchased alloy Enduro adapters. Both adapters were nothing like the stiffness had in the wider bearing spacing on the prior MASI bike and was very noticeable to my son on the crank flex. I then went to the BB conversion solution which is much better.

FWIW, my 2015 Allez Comp Race came stock with the Praxis adapter and their Turn Zayante crankset. Nary a sound. My 2012 Allez E5 frameset had standard SRAM BB30 bearings with an FSA carbon BB30 crankset, also silent.

More money (spent), more problems. On my old handlebar, i had space for my Garmin mount and a mount for a headlight (NiteRider Lumina). My new Zipp Vuka Sprint doesn't leave nearly enough space on the bar itself for mounting, which leaves me mounting to either the stem or my helmet. My stem is at -6 degrees, which means that the light would be directed above horizontal as opposed to slightly below horizontal as I would prefer. I could also do the helmet, but that seems to lead to problems of its own.

Suggestions?

I can't believe you changed to a compact bar after years of chiding me about mine.

The Barfly has a narrow profile at the bar end that might buy you a few mm. I'm not familiar with that model lamp but my Nightrider is adjustable about 30 degrees either way so I'm not sure why this is an issue. Maybe some pics would help.

@shovelhd, thanks for the suggestion. I will snap a few photos later. In the mean time, i have mounted a small Sigma flashing light to the bar via elastic band/ zip tie. Perhaps i'll just get the helmet mount, though i hear drivers really hate helmet level lights...

PS. The bar is traditional round . And it gets even better as i apparently need special bar-end plugs as the Cat-eye screw-in type and the ones that came with my Fizik bar tape are both too wide...

Echappist, depending on the stem you are using, you could use a Tilquist mount for the garmin to free up space for the light.

thanks for the suggestions. unfortunately, the suggestion would require me to shift the bar off center to make space, which i would prefer not to do at the moment

Dumb q about bb30 adapter cups - are they supposed to rotate/spin along with the cranks?

My old ones didn't but they were glued onto the frame (from what I can tell) to stop them from creaking or something.

The ones I installed (Wheels Mfg) do, and I got some fancy Campy cups that'll hopefully be stiffer than the plastic Wheels Mfg ones.

Anyway I imagine it can go either way, but I'm wondering which way it's supposed to be.

Yup those adapters.

With the campy cranks I have (external bearings) it seems like I'm not actually using the campy bearings, but only the bb30 bearings, if the cups spin too.. which obviously works, I was just confused about which way it's "supposed" to be.

Not a Campy expert but I know that Praxis makes an adapter specifically for Campy Ultratorque cranks that the Campy bearings sit inside of.

the way to think about it is whether the adapter goes into the bearings or the bearings go into the adapter.

anything that goes into the bearings rotates (e.g. the crank arm/spindle when you don't use an adapter, or an adapter+spindle+arm pressed into the bearings).

if the adapter is an extension of the frame (bearings get pressed into the adapter), then only spindle+arm rotate.

Giro Synthe 200 mile review: Nice helmet, good quality of fit and materials. Definitely less cooling by a good margin than the Prevail it replaced. Not sure how much I'd like to race in August in the helmet.

While I would expect it to have less cooling than non-aero road helmets, from pictures it looks like it's better ventilated than other aero helmets like the Evade or Giro Attack. I have the Attack Shield, it's definitely not suitable for summer riding/racing in TX. I was thinking the Synthe might be a good choice but now I'm reconsidering. I don't mind giving up a little cooling for aero, but I definitely need something with better ventilation than the Attack Shield.

I went from an Evade to a Synthe and they both seem fairly similar to me. I haven't used the Synthe over 70* or so as of yet, but I don't see if being a problem at all.

i've used the evade in 100+.

if you're climbing slowly in that heat, it is hot (so is the any helmet; the evade feels a tad hotter), but if you are riding at 25mph it is just fine (IMO).
