[Shimano hydraulic brakes] Would You Reuse an Olive?

Not that I'd want to reuse one, but, in a pinch, would it be safe to reuse an already compressed olive - even temporarily - and get the brake working?

Are you referring to reattaching a hose that has been removed, or removing the olive and insert from the hose and using it in another hose? The first is fine, the second would likely be impossible. I have re-used an insert with a new olive, but that required destructive removal of the olive.

Let's say I'm swapping levers as an example.

I also have two or three pieces of hose that I had cut earlier with the barbs and olives still attached; i know I could burn the pieces of hose away, save the barbs, and throw the used olives away, but I wondered if I should keep them for emergencies instead.

I have successfully reused barbs.

I have successfully swapped levers without installing a new barb and olive.

Look at what you're working with. Frequently the olive wasn't seated correctly and you can see the distortion. But if the olive looks good, it will likely seal again.

The downside to any of this is that it might leak, not explode. If it doesn't leak, it's working.

Olives are use once and done items. I might try to reuse an olive in an emergency field repair. However, consider that a used olive will have a smaller ID and will probably to de difficult to slide onto the line.

For non emergencies, check that you have olives BEFORE cutting the line.

You can't remove olives from lines. You can reuse them by leaving them on the line and tightening them down again.
