I've found Columbus to be quite nice. You can't live just anywhere in the city, but if you are within a few miles of the scioto or olentangy river MUP's you'll have easy hassle free access to OSU and downtown, not to mention a couple of nice parks. Can't find a school much bigger than OSU.

I was pretty impressed with Washington DC's bike-friendliness. Certainly much better than Boston. Also not as cold, and there are a few pretty good universities in the area.

Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill are all pretty good as far as bike-friendliness goes, but the region's still got a ways to go in terms of connectivity, transportation, etc. It also gets pretty hot around here, but the universities (NC State, Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill) are filled with cyclists.

I went to Guilford and was car free most of the time. Greensboro is a fine town for a bike.

I was at Greensboro College, lived below UNCG near Holden Road, also over near Cone Blvd and Church Street. Worked at Moses Cone Hospital most of the time I was living there. Really nice city to live and work in.
