Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best time and places to buy discounted bikes

Looking for the collective wisdom of
which type of outlet; Nashbar, LBS, UK sellers etc. deeply discount bikes when.

In the market now and wondering whether to buy now or wait.

For example Nashbar has discounted bikes now and has a 22% off old stock. So is this the time to buy from Nashbar or do they discount even closer to Christmas (I know the 20% of thing is pretty common at Nashbar).

IMO ebay has the best deals. Barely used higher end bikes for 60% of retail.
But here's the problem. Average consumer who even knows a little about bikes, can easily make the wrong purchase off ebay. It takes a real critical eye to make the right sale. Many factors to consider. I have had friends that sent me links saying this was the bike for them and were ready to hit the buy button and the bikes they were looking at were the wrong model, wrong condition, wrong groupset, wrong size, wrong buyer etc.

If you aren't really into bikes and know a lot about ebay, best to buy right from a local bikeshop with warranty especially if you buy a carbon bike.

A friend of mine who I have fitted went to his local bike shop and they talked him into a Tarmac one size too small with 70mm stem. This guy isn't dumb and is an electrical engineer. Fortunately the shop who really didn't care he was on the right bike but rather wanted to make a sale....they took the bike back and he got the proper size in an endurance bike with some coaching from me...we are good friends... and now he is happy as a clam. A Tarmac sized small for his body was the complete wrong bike.

Good luck.

Facebook buy and sell groups are much better. The two to check out are the Tri n Sell It one and the road bike one. Amazing deals all the time, even with shipping you can get great deals. Plus you don’t have to sift through a mountain of **** like on eBay.

You mean there is really something of value on FB? Shocker.
Here's a news flash. The only way you determine if a deal is good or not is by wading through the morass of BS as you put it.

Late fall and winter usually have the best deals at the various internet stores. Competitivecyclist, wiggle, ribble, etc. have closeout sales on older models, overstocked frames, etc. Popular frame sizes are in short supply so if you see one you like, don't wait too long to buy.

And of course, Bikesdirect.com ALWAYS has a sale running.

Ebay, Facebook, Craigslist, and cycling club swap meets are other places to find deals but more work is required.

Try velomine.com. I bought a Colnago C-RS bike with shimano 105 parts for half price. I then stripped the bike down to the frame and sold the build kit in one e-bay transaction. That made the frame only $950, compared to $1700 at most online dealers. Built the bike back up with campy chorus and other favorite parts.

I honestly think if you are patient and keep watching, the deals will be there. It just takes time. The stores you mentioned are all good. Find out when Performance Bike has a double point day. That is a great time to buy a bike and get lots of extras with the points. I have not been there recently but they were carrying Ridley the last time I was there. I'm sure they still have Fuji as well. Good bang for the dollar.

Don't write them off yet. It's a bankruptcy and closing of 40 stores. Perhaps they can reinvent themselves and gain traction. Or its a harbinger of the times and we see more business models like Canyon. Time will tell. Personally, I like both lbs and Performance. My lbs has little in the way of clothes and tools. Performance has been good for that.

The deals online don't look that special beyond the normal sales they run all of the time.
