Value and year of vintage Fiorelli

I may purchase this vintage Fiorelli if the price is right, so I need to know an idea of its value before I can bargain. I'd also like to see if someone has an idea of a year of manufacture. My best guess is 1960-62.

This bike has Campagnolo dropouts, Magistroni crankset, Gran Sport derailleurs and shifters, Balilla brakes, and Gnutti (?) hubs with Fiamme Yellow label (Pegasus) rims. The stem appears to have "Compe" embossed on the side but I can't find any reference to a maker on the web. It's claimed to be all original. I haven't seen the bike personally yet but will soon.

Sweet bike. I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it were my size and the price not too crazy. $300-$400 would be a reasonable price for a craigslist sale. The bike should be worth more on eBay. The condition of this bike is excellent.

I picked up an Olmo gran sport from 1960 with very similar fittings to yours. It's a really fun bike.

Be aware that despite the Campagnolo dropouts, the frame is likely not Columbus, but a mid-range, plain gauge tubeset, such as that offered by Falck. It was common in the 1960s, for Italian mid-range models to spec Camapgnolo only for the droputs and derailleurs.

I saw the bike today and, though it’s a bit larger than my size, I was able to take it for a quick spin around the block.

The seller says he bought the bike from the original owner, who dates the bike as from 1960.

Confirming some of juvela’s comments, the cable clips are REG, the bar end caps are Gaslo, and the bottle cage is REG (with an ALE aluminum bottle). However, the toe clips are ALE with unidentifiable straps. The hubs are Gnutti with early QRs marked Lic Campagnolo. The rims are 27” Fiamme clinchers.

The brake levers resemble Universal Model 39 with the side clamps, but not exactly. Anyone?

The bicycle license sticker is from Evanston, Illinois and expires March 31, 1965. I’m not fond of non-original stickers, but this one might have to stay.

Brakes:

Balilla products were manufactured by Giovanni Galli S.p.A. so if you wish to pursue investigation on them you could check under that name as well.



AL-E products produced by Allara.

Since clips Allara straps likely to be as well...

Some have the name on the buckle and some on the strap only -




Early Gnutti QR skewers marked LIC CAMP are the only ones in the industry whose cams operate "backwards":
likely a stipulation of the crafty Tullio...

Experts who have explored the matter report that Gnutti brand hubs were manufactured by Fratelli Brivo ("FB").

Brad L ,

you inquired as to the cycle's brake levers

with this type of lever which clamps at the side there is a left and a right

the trade convention is to mount them so that the clamp is to the inside

evidently, someone has removed them at some point for mechanical work and remounted them the wrong way round

since you will be likely rewrapping the bar it will be an easy matter to put them back

I thought that might be the case, especially since your hands tend to wrap around the outside of the levers. SWMBO is not happy about another bike so I haven't purchased it yet. The owner is holding it til Thursday. WHEN it does come home, the brake levers will be repositioned properly and the bars rewrapped. I'd also consider moving the shifters up and off the decal, as long as it's not torn in the process.

I bought the bike today and posted it on the C&V page here. I paid $200, so I think I got a fairly good deal.
