Well, here I have an all original, 1 owner, house kept DX-4000...in MY SIZE frame!

The owner lives about 50-60 miles East from my house, but said he had work that was bringing him about 3 miles from my house...so he brought it with him to save me a trip. What a guy!! And he was very happy knowing it was going to someone who would appreciate it the way he did.

Originally he had it listed as a 1985 model (which is when he remembers buying it new), but the serial number and catalog pages I found make it a 1981 model. If I'm wrong, please correct me!

Anyway, a Super nice guy who gave me a Super nice price...$100...

Lengthen the chain if you can and always avoid the big/big (and small/small) combos.

I know, and I'm surprised that it worked as nicely as it did for the few blocks I rode it on as a quick test.

All done...with the exception of a few spots I see I missed...!~@#$%^&*...

I did change out the water bottle holder to a chrome one that looks nicer with all the polished alloy and chrome on the bike. Not bad for a 38 year old bike!!

BTW...look at the 12-speed decal on the top tube near the saddle. Paint had chipped off, revealing a chrome frame beneath, in case anyone didn't know this.

I had one of those once. A beautifully built frame and very elegant finish. Great rider too. Unfortunately the one I had was a bit long in the top tube, so I moved it along.

This will be a keeper. I've sold off quite a few lately, even those in my size, but I've been looking for one of these for a while.

So beautiful. How long it the top tube? I know many of the '80s' DX-2000s (the only ones of decent rank that were available as 26"/66cm frames) had 59cm top tubes, which is perfect for me. There's an '87 66cm DX-2000 on ebay right now for double what you paid for yours, but I like the 4000's colors better. Still....I think about it.

Both the '81 and the '87 have top a tube (c to c) measurement of 57cm.

@oldbikenewbike I just wanted to follow up on this, if you wish to reply, on how you've liked the bike for the last year? I ask as there is a 26"/66cm frame and fork of this same year and model DX-4000 for sale in lesser condition (and for more money, of course) and am thinking about it, but wanted an assessment from someone who's actually ridden that exact height of frame for some time--ride quality, steering, handling, etc, even if you've upgraded it or replaced a few things. I would greatly appreciate it--thank you!

It's one of my bikes that I don't ride as often as I should. Not for lack of wanting to, lol, but I have quite a few to choose from and don't ride as often as I'd like to lately. I love the bike overall, and have no intentions of ever parting with it. These don't come around to often...especially in this condition.

All is factory equipped as it left the showroom. Personally, I wouldn't change a thing but the saddle...which I did with a Specialized Body Geometry.

I'm more than happy with it. At some point the tires will need to go though...

Love My '81 but it is 24" and 23" would be a better fit.
