Winter Cycling Torture

I've been in Bozeman, MT since October, and it's made my training a living hell. There's usually snow or ice on the roads and we've hovered between 15-35 degrees since November. After about an hour on the rollers I want to snap my frame over my knee. I really took that California weather for granted.

You know, we have a resident of the great state of Montana 'round these parts. He's been there for a while.

Your post will probably make him cry.

I was going to ride this AM, but the roads were covered with a glaze of ice. I need to Harden the F Up. I suck.

That feels better already. I will ride at 11:30AM. Hoping for better road conditions then.

Wouldn't one have access to other prime crosstraining opportunities like great downhill skiing, cc skiing, and snowshoe running/hiking in bozeman, mt that most others dont have? My heart will bleed for you as I ride my trainer tonight in the basement while my skis rust in a corner.

...or you can live in the Bay Area, go on a warm 50 miler on Friday, drive 3 hours and be skiing in Tahoe on Saturday.

....and then kill yourself when you finish grad school and move away, because really, who wants to raise a family in CA (plus real estate is something that can actually be purchased in other parts of the country)?

Learn to Telemark. Aggressive tele skiing makes big "guads".
I am amazed at my hill climbing ability when I get back on the bike in the spring.

Last year in Portland when we had all that snow, I spent a lot of time at spinning classes. There's something about riding a trainer with a group of people that makes it a little easier.

I used to live over the Rockies in Idaho, so I know there are tons of things to do in MT when the snow flies. Aside from the obvious skiing, there's snowshoeing. Or just build yourself a Pugsley and go ride in the snow on the trails.

Wait, you're in Bozo, and we haven't ridden yet?

Oh, and it's nice to see somebody that understands what I mean when I say "it is impossible to ride a road bike in Bozeman during winter".

You guys should at minimum invest in computrainers or tacx imagic's or whatever they are. I ride my friends from time to time and makes trainer time enjoyable.

Also buy some skate skis and prepare to suffer. Skating has been a great 'plan B' for me when the weather goes to crap here.

That stuff is HUGE here. I'd get into it, but I'm an elitist assbag, and would rather not feel inferior to anyone.

Good insight there. According to friends I'm a natural at skating and picked it up right away and was good right away. Even so I was getting passed by old women frighteningly often.

It's better now but I'm finding that I haven't learned how to suffer on skis like I can on a bike. The increased lactate production from using the entire body make it a real *****.

Yea, skii's will definitly humble you.

I will say my fitness was never better than when skiing. More motor, less weight and more stable mentally than just spending the winter on a trainer.

Bozeman is warm compared to where I am.... but I do feel the same pain. 65 hrs of trainer work so far this winter, and I Mtn bike in the snow... to a point.
