T minus 12 to wheels up

Taking the family to Italy on a real freaking CYCLING VACATION! Flight to Newark NJ leaves at 8 am in the morning, and then off to Milan and a train down to Arezzo. It's going to be a loooooong day.

6 days of cycling through Tuscany and then a couple days in Florence and Rome to cap it off and top off the kid's culture meter. I hope I get the GoPro right, the last two rides I went on I neglected to turn it on. Aside from that, I expect I'll load up my regular camera card with pics. I actually know how to operate that damn thing, so I'm expecting glorious results.

Anyway, I'm lugging my laptop (so I can store the video!) so I'll probably check in at some point but to say I'm beside myself with excitement would be a severe understatement. Keep an eye peeled for weird strava segments.

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

Have a great trip. Don't let the desire to record stuff interfere with enjoying every moment in real time. IMO the best souvenirs of trips are those recorded and stored between the ears.

Funny you say that. My (14 now) daughter asked me one trip if we were going to take a lot of pictures (I think we were driving up to Yellowstone) and I asked her "Have you traveled with this family before?" But no, I get your point, and no, I'm not tragically awful but I will get plenty of photos in.

We went to Tuscany in 2001 and I had a Nikon Coolpix 990 camera. 3 megapixels and back then you could get a 32 MB (yes, MB) card for about $32... 1 pic per MB, so I had four of them for our family trip to Italy, Ireland and England. 3 weeks, and all I could save were about 128 images. Talk about picking and choosing! This trip features a canon 6D (20 mpix) and a handful of 32 GB (note the G) cards, not to mention the external drive. I fully plan to rectify the shortage of pictures from our first trip but no, first priority is having a blast with the family and we certainly will.

How do you bring bikes onto a plane?

I live a half hour from Newark NJ and I have a friend who lives in Whittier, CA. How ironic.

I got this far and my brain was wondering how Newark could be a cycling vacation, let alone CYCLING VACATION!

Every trip I look at to Tuscany just makes me want to go there more and more. Looking forward to the trip report, too.

Have a great trip. Just going to echo FBinNY and say don't get hung up on pics and videos, enjoy the ride and the sights around you.

Cycling portion wrapped up today. Riding through Tuscany and then Chianti... damn. Fully supported, scenery was great, roads were sometimes iffy. We're goofing off in Florence till Sunday and then Rome till Wednesday. I'll upload some pics and attach some details after we get back but it was a phenomenal trip.

200+ miles in 6 days and about 16k feet of climbing. Lots of espresso, some chianti, brunello and assorted other italian wines. Still waiting to have a meal that's less than splendid.

Funny you say that - our next stop is Rome (Sun-Wed) and the LAST time we were here, we had a terrible lunch outside the Vatican. I swear they used Heinz ketchup for sauce. Blech. We did some research this time - no random meal stops.

Add me to the list of people waiting for the photos! I'm interested in hearing about the tour company you used, also.

Yep. I've been there many times (the project I work on is 1/3rd Italian). Eating with local Italians: Great. Good guide book recommendations: fine. Random restaurant: Mostly awful tourist traps!

Expect to eat many deep fried zucchini flowers.
