Orbea?
Thinking about getting another road bike for my girlfriend and I am wondering if I should get her an Orbea like mine or go with something else. I have only ridden Orbea and so don't really know the difference between them and other brands. Question is do you like the brand Orbea or do you like a different one better?

Everyone's going to reply with whatever it is they happen to ride. Orbea makes really nice bikes but so do a lot of other manufacturers. She should try out as many as possible.

+1. Don't get her a "brand." Get her a "fit" at an appropriate price point. Have her try everything and go with the one that fits her best (physically). Brand is less relevant than fit and feel. Also, does she already ride and what are her demands/desires for a new bike? Does make a difference in determining price point and intended use...

She doesnt really ride but neither did I when I first started and I am really glad I started out with a nice bike because it made it a whole lot more enjoyable and ultimately helped me to become as passionate as I am about riding and kept me in the sport. Also by starting out with a nice bike it saved me from wasting money by having to sell the old one and upgrade to something I could eventually race in and that I could have for years to come without needing a upgrade. I kinda want her to have the same thing.

You don't know if she will take to riding the way you did. Rent a bike for her and see where it leads.

You can rent a bike? Where, my local bike shop doesn't have the option that I know of anyway and I have never heard of it before. Not that I don't believe you but maybe it is just in your area/particular shop?

I was able to rent a demo bike from a Specialized dealer when I was looking. There were a handful of other shops in the area that also rented. Call around.

About a year ago, I took a full day and just went out testing bikes. I road a Synapse Carbon, Roubaix, Giant Defy Advanced 2 and 3, Felt Z5, Tarmac and Orbea Onyx. I WANTED to love the Orbea. It was a screaming deal. Out of all of them, though, it was my least favorite. However, that is what felt good to me. Others will have a different opinion. Take her to ride it, and a bunch of others. Buy what she is most comfortable on.

Wish I had known you could do this when I was buying mine. (Although I love my Orbea and consider the brand to be one of the best out there)

What didn't you like about the Onyx? I love mine. Although a lot of other people feel cramped on them I am only 5' 6'' and ride a 48 cm so it isn't a problem for me. Also Orbea has a lifetime frame warranty is pretty nice.

You can rent Trek 2.1 or Madones at Bikeworld in San Antonio. Alamo bikes rents also but doesn't list their fleet.

Love my Orbea. I wouldn't change it unless I damaged my frame.

I really glad I got mine. It's the Onyx and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Not only that but its one of the nicest ones in town so people always compliment me on it.

Much like the advice given above - rent one and see if she takes to it. I know from experience. My wife said she REALLY wanted a bike. She said there was nothing like the experience of riding a bike. We went to several stores to try out bikes and after spending an inordinate amount of time finding something she liked ... it now sits gathering dust. It was the most frustrating experience as she drove me crazy with getting the brand she wanted based on nostalgia - Raleigh... now made in Taiwan. She has ridden it approximately 1/2 a mile in the five years since she made me buy it for her. It cost 600.00. It's a lovely bike to look at it, doesn't have a scratch on it. The cassette in the back is spotless. All I can say is I could have used the money to buy something more practical like a couple of Paslode nail guns, or nice table saw.

I'd let her go on lots of test rides. You may go with her to the bike shops but let her do the talking and let her go on the test rides without you.
If you "help out" with lots of advice and suggestions, she may get the bike she feels you want her to have and not necessarily the one that feels the best. She then won't ride that bike and there will be nothing but trouble in River City.
