Demo Bike
Hello,
I'm considering buying either a new 2012 7.5 or 7.6 FX but I'm concerned about getting a demo considering that we are now almost at the end of 2012. Is there a way that I can figure out if the bike I'm getting was used as a demo bike or not?
Thanks.

Check the tires for small rocks and dirt.
Besides, I wouldn't worry about it much.

Nope, wouldn't worry about it. Most shops put their bikes together, put them out on the floor, and it sits there for people to ride and try out until somebody decides to buy it. So theoretically, any bike sitting on the floor can be a "demo" bike. However, if you mean a bike that has been often rented out, as some shops do, then that's a different story. It will surely show more wear and tear.
A close friend of mine just bought a new 2011 Specialized Tarmac, nicely discounted. It's probably been sitting on the sales floor of the LBS awhile, and tried a bunch of times as it's sat there. It looks brand new, except for some very slight soiling of the white handlebar tape. He loves his bike. He had an issue the the Apex shifting lever breaking, could've been from others who tried the bike out and forced the lever, or it could've been from him, as he admittedly forced the lever himself when adapting to road bike shifting and Apex. The bike shop took the bike in, ordered him a new part, and had it back to him in about 3 or 4 days. At no cost, because a newly purchased bike is under warrantee, even a clearanced model.

It is safe to assume that any bike on the floor has been ridden at least once if not more. If it concerns you then ask for one to be assembled. A quick look at the chain, tires, pads and rims will tell if it has been used much. I would not worry about it.

If the tires still have the nubs and look pretty clean then you know it hasn't been rode much. Personally I'd look for one that looks as if its been rode a little more and then ask for a discount... Either of those bikes should give you at least a few thousand trouble free miles, so I wouldn't worry about it much.
