Difference In Sizing Between Mens and Ladies

I've just bought an ex-demo bike online in medium was expecting something around the 52/54cm size, it was listed as Unisex and it's arrived but has women's 46cm for 5"3 - 5"6 labelled on the frame (I'm 5"7).

Would you raise and push the seat back and try and make it work or would you send it back .... I believe top tubes are longer on men's bikes and also with the seat really high I'm going to be at a very down angle on the bars in the drop position, is there anything else in the geometry that'd make it not so comfortable as well??

Would be interested in hearing others thoughts but if I send it back might be the difference between me being able to have a bike or not as this was very affordable.

Don't ever try to make it work if you have another option. Send it back and get the right size.

Otherwise, W/M geometry depends entirely on the specific model. Some are essentially the same while some are different enough to cause issues. There is no standard delta that can be used to answer your question.

Must admit the send it back option seems the best although looking at the men's small against the women's medium there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of difference and as I'm on the cusp at 5"7 I'd probably be better off with the small if it was a mans bike ... in which case is there much difference ... although went round to a friends this eve and he has a Trek road bike which I'd guess is 52/54 and it did seem more "natural".

I would imagine you'd need to send it back, unless this particular company's 46 is like Surly/AllCity, and then the top tube measures out like other manufacturer's 52's. For many makers, the women's model has no different geometry, they just comes with narrower handlebars, and a wider seat. Spesh seems to make them a little shorter top tube, and a little taller head tube, for whatever reason, though on their bikes, I've had both 52's and 54's that fit just right
