First of all, noob trying to find a Cannondal specific thread w/o success. So I'll give this one a try.


I have what I think is an '83 cannondale. Serial number is AA009**, where each asterisk is a number.


An '83 cannondale catalog shows two bikes: ST-300 and ST-500. The bike I have shows components consistent with the 500, but the catalog does not identify what components the 300 has.


QUESTION: Can I tell by reference to the serial number whether my bike is a 500 or a 300?


QUESTION: My bike is charcoal. Has anyone figured out the paint code for Charcoal?


OBSERVATION: I bought the first c'dale I ever saw, an SR-300 in '84. Have had a load of Cannondales since, and still have an '86 Black Lightning I bought new. Also currently have '05 Tandem, CAADX, '89 Crest bike and '16 Black Disc.

Cannondale didn't use the serial number to tell you what the frame was used on. The components on the bike determined that. The ST300 and ST500 probably used the same frame. Roger

Paint in '83 would have been Imron, heaven knows what the actual color is. I've had good luck touching it up by mixing Testor's model paint black and silver to get the right color. Easiest way to mix is to tape a Ziploc bag to a piece of cardboard and put a small amount of each color on it, then mix in the middle until correct. You'll need more black than silver.

Yes, all the frames for ST, SR & SM were the same. They got different paint for different models.
At the time the serial # was stamped, they could be used for any of the models.
