So, it's time to show you all, why I passed on that Ron Cooper, in my recent "Heartbroken" thread. 😉 I had to save my dollars for this, a 1991 ST600, in the 25" flavor, which was the biggest size that year. 😁 I swapped over some things, from the old ST400, like bars & saddle & seatpost & stem & shifters, but mostly kept all the other bits, to assess them better.
The paint is nearly perfect, I've found 2 very small scratches, and I love the blue sparkly color.
Not only that, I gained cantilever posts, and have room for HUGE tires, using my 700c Tri-color wheels. It'll be awhile, before I know how big a tire it'll take, the Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires I have on aren't even broken in yet. 😉 I'll edit in pics later, forgot to open the full site on my phone. Edit: Nevermind, fixed.

The 'nother? That's a 700 x 32 on the back, looks like it'd take a 35 or bigger. 🙂

Thank you, sir. I was smitten immediately. 😁 BTW, this is the one that had Grip Shifters, which was pretty goofy looking, IMHO. Plus they were loose, and not working right, hence the Tri-colors.

stardog9, 37mm Contis will fit, but 35mm Pasalas BARELY fit between the chain stays. Congrats on your find.

Trekking bars, yes. They're far more comfortable than I originally thought they'd be. And cheap enough to try out. Mainly, they're very wide, something like 52mm (?), where the Modolo bars that were on it were probably 42mm, way too narrow for me. Long-legged galoots like me kinda need them, even if we don't know it yet. 😁
Plus the added hand positions really help, on longer rides. I use Tri-color indexed downtube shifters, so only need room for brake levers, on the bars. I'm also using Tri-color brake levers, which look kinda goofy at first, mounted "sideways" like that, but I got used to that in no time. They're really very comfortable, ya just need to be open-minded enough to try them. 😎

A little update, I've done a bit of catalog reading, and learned some interesting things. 🙂
First, this was the first year that the touring bikes used 700c wheels, from the factory. I'm still not sure about the rear OLD, but this one's definitely spaced at 130, confirmed by the serial #. And it's the last year it was called an ST, the '92 was just "T".
Also, I believe this was the first year they put the model # decals on the top tube, and since the '92 was a T, this was the only year that said ST600 or ST1000 on the TT.
This was also the last year of the "solid" frame, meaning they started using the replaceable derailleur hangers, in '92.
Almost forgot, in '91, they dropped the ST400, and only sold the ST600 and ST1000, which was the same frame, but different components.
And finally, as pointed out to me by a forum member with caveman in his moniker 😉, this was the first year for the steel uni-crown forks, on the touring bikes. I'd much rather have a nice lugged fork, but you can't have everything, huh? 😋😁
So yeah, these early 90s touring bikes went through some changes alright.

It wasn't the last year. My 93 T1000 still had the steel fork although the catalogues say otherwise.

I think you misunderstood. 🙂 The '91 was the FIRST year of the unicrowns. The caveman's 1990 has a cool internally lugged crown, and the '80s bikes had "normally" lugged steel forks.
EDIT: I see now, yours has the same internally lugged fork as caveman's. Wanna trade? 😉

I have the same bike, 1991 blue ST600, all stock except the tires, although my paint is in worse shape than yours. I'll be very interested to see what changes and updates you make to it.

I see someone updated your shifters to barends, but yep, we're in the same club. 😎 Here's the pic from the previous owners ad, showing the Grip-shifters. I think someone attempted to remove them, possibly for that white bar tape, and lost some parts (?). They were really out of whack, so ditching them was a bit easier.

I bought mine in 1992 at the Clean Machine in Carborro, NC, and they built it with the bar end shifters, maybe because the 1992 models had bar end shifters. I saved about $100 buying the previous year model instead of the 1992. I didn't know anything about bikes at the time, and still learning now, but they took care of me - great bike store and glad they are still in business.
